Album Review
This CD was the debut for Fourplay, a popular quartet comprised of keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bassist Nathan East, and drummer Harvey Mason. The music sounds more or less like a Bob James small-group date with Ritenour as a major soloist. The style is between jazz, R&B, and pop with an emphasis on lightweight originals, soulful and moderately funky rhythms, and predictable radio-friendly music. Nothing unexpected occurs, but fans of James and Ritenour should enjoy both this CD and Fourplay in general.

Amazing!
by Music2MeEarsAs a regular fan of lounge and jazz, I believe this record has met my criteria. I mean come on! This is like the greatest Jazz Debut of all time! Favorites are "Bali Run", "101 Eastbound", "Foreplay", "Moonjogger", "Max-O-Man", "After The Dance", "October Morning", and "Wish You Were Here". Otherwise, the rest of the album (which this might be the whole thing...) is completely standard and is completely fine. (Just not favorites of mine.) I own this already, and this spectacular performance plays again and again in my car! Check out my songs, and see if I'm not right!
Fourplay's First!
by Anthony 101At the time this CD (cassette for me) was released I thought it was the best thing since sliced... you know what I mean. In the early '90's I loved jazz (a longtime Michael Franks fan) but I found Miles or any of the traditional artist hard to swallow, but I was turned on to Lee Ritenour, so this Fourplay CD was just what the doctor ordered! It was semi-light but cool, pop(ish) but not sweet sappy candy; it just had great grooves! If you are looking to persuade a fellow R&B or pop lover into the contemporary jazz field, I would suggest you start with this album (anything early Lee Ritenour/Bob James is worth the listen!)
