Album Review

Trip merrily along with the fun-loving fellows from your favorite noise rock band, now sadly defunct. Bang assembles material from the Jesus Lizard's EPs and singles, throwing in a few unreleased tracks as well. So it's not someone's idea of a best-of collection (if it were, omitting "Nub" and "Puss" would be inexcusable), nor is it as cohesive and powerful as 1991's tour de force Goat. But if you don't want to go searching for the "Mouth Breather" 7", and you simply have to hear their cover of Trio's "Sunday You Need Love," Bang is a more than worthwhile purchase. Speaking of Trio, the Lizard must have some inordinate fondness for the German synth pop group, as Bang also features a previously unreleased cover of "Anna." (So where's "Da Da Da," we wonder?) The band obviously has fun doing other people's songs, smoking through the Dicks' "Wheelchair Epidemic" (singer David Yow and bassist David Wm. Sims were originally in Scratch Acid and were most likely influenced by the Dicks, as they're all from Austin, TX) and a Chrome medley that they entitle, simply, "Chrome" (the original songs are "TV as Eyes" and "Abstract Nympho"). And the live tracks are appropriately blistering, like the mind-blowing "Killer McHann," with all it's creepy lyrics and unorthodox time signatures. And "Dancing Naked Ladies" and "Fly on the Wall," from Goat and Down, respectively, vary from the versions found on those albums, making them necessary for completists.

Customer Reviews

Not really a complete collection... but still good.

Basically i'll echo what the main reviewer said, this is a decent collection of their early Touch and Go 7"s and a few unreleased tracks... the thing is though is that it's missing some really amazing songs. If only they added about 4 more songs it would be a complete collection of their b-sides. 2 of the tracks i believe Capitol may own the publishing rights to but 2 are indeed Touch and Go Releases and should have been added. The missing songs are: "Panic In Cicero" which was their amazing song off the Clerks Soundtrack, the highly superior version of Pervertedly Slow called "Uncommonly Good" off the Lounge Ax Defense and Relocation CD and 2 of their b-sides from the Shot album... "Shut Up" which is a great cover of the Stranglers track and "Bad Guy" which is pretty hard to find actually. I'd still say you should check Bang out but just know that the above tracks should be tracked down to complete the entire Jesus Lizard b-sides package. Plus, the Jesus Lizard have alwas used 4 letter words for album titles... i always thought they should have ended their run with an album that stopped beating around the bush and just named it an actual curse word, Oh, well.

nice live bits!!!

they were always a live band. def worth owning for a real jesus lizard fan. seasick live at brixton is amazing.

Also Missing The Song Called: POP SONG

The customer reviewer named XFOLIATE is right on in listing the missing B-Sides. I forgot all about PANIC IN CICERO from the CLERKS soundtrack. What a great song. There's one more cool (and rare) Jesus Lizard B-Side sadly missing from this collection called POP SONG. Don't let the title fool you. It isn't a "pop song" at all. I haven't heard it in years, but it's classic Jesus Lizard from around the time of GOAT. Also note that this B-Side version of DANCING NAKED LADIES is a different (slightly earlier) recording than the album version from LIAR. Both versions are very worthwhile. The most noticeable difference between the two is what sounds like an additional guitar overdub during the "chimey" part near the end in the album version.

Biography

Formed: 1987 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Willfully abrasive and atonal, the Jesus Lizard emerged in the early '90s as a leading noise rock band in the American independent underground. During the first part of the decade, the band turned out a series of independent records filled with scathing, disembowelling, guitar-driven pseudo-industrial noise, all of which received positive reviews in underground music publications and heavy college-radio...
