Album Review

Slobberbone's second record pushes the country-rock concept to its logical extremes, fusing authentic roots trappings — fiddles, dobros and the like — with punk-metal rave-ups similar in spirit to AC/DC. The juxtaposition works: Brent Best is a fine songwriter, equally comfortable moving from bracing punk numbers like "Haze of Drink" to long, mournful guitar jams like "Get Gone Again" to quiet country sketches like "Little Drunk Fists"; combined with his band's impressive sonic reach, Barrel Chested is a real treat.

Best of genre

This album captures everything so-called alt.country is about. Songs that'll make you cry, make you smile, make you think, and make you want to buy more slobberbone. If you love wine and women, despite the pain they've caused you over the years, you'll connect with just about every track on this record. Unfortunately, they haven't quite yet acheived this level of greatness again. ("Slippage", sad to say, was aptly titled,) But here's hoping. Hey Brent, don't focus on what you think your audience wants from you... write for yourself. BTW, BIlly Prichard still gives me chills....

Best Album of the 90s, PERIOD

I don't care about the iTunes/New West reissue date on here, this album was released in 1997 and it kicks everything else off the list. Brent has lyriccraft down to a science like Dylan, the band rocks like the Who, and no one can touch them. I just saw the reunion show in Denton and I was absolutely blown away, they played for three straight hours with no breaks and blew the roof off of the place. Buy this album if you like music.

One of my favorites

Great album, period. What more can you ask?

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Alternative country-rock unit Slobberbone comprised singer/guitarist Brent Best, lead guitarist Jess Barr, bassist Brian Lane, and drummer Tony Harper. Formed in Denton, TX, in early 1992, the group originally approached their music with the same seriousness with which they chose their name (a reference to a dog's chew toy, incidentally), gigging in the pursuit of free beer and little else; their first live show, in fact, was even held at an area liquor store. However, in 1995 Slobberbone self-released...
