Customer Reviews
Edgy rendition of powerful music
This album is edgy and powerful, full of raw emotion and drama. The performance matches the power of Bartok's creation, played as it should be. This is not "pretty" classical music and it shouldn't be -- it should grab you and not let go. To hear the difference, listen to the 30-second samples of Quartet 4, last movement, by different artists. This recording is the most powerful with sharp attacks and elegant mastery of the complex dissonant chords. If you're new to Bartok or the quartets, don't try to take them all at once. This is complex, deep music but the reward for patience is great. Start with one (Quartet 4 is a good choice) and listen to it about three times. Your brain will start to "get" it, and you'll be completely blown away.
Glad I bought.
I'm glad I bought this album. My ears have been opened listening to Bartok. I sat down and listened for over 2 hours to these string quartets and I was stunded by their beauty. The Emerson String Quartet of which I have other albums is one of the best. The quality of the recording is good. I can't wait to listen to it again.
Couldn't agree more with the positive reviews.
This is one of the finest CD sets in my collection. I love everything about it. Fascinating music, well worth the listen, and the sound quality is most excellent. The Emerson Quartet is astonishing, and they seem to turn solid gold anything they decide to put on a record. My personal favorite is the Fifth, but I can't find one negative thing to say about any track on this disc. Heed the other reviewers and be patient with it. There is so much dissonance and often so much going on that it's easy to be lost at first and it's not uncommon to be turned off by the pervasive use of discordant harmonies. Proceed with reverence for the six masterpieces presented here and I guarantee your patience will be rewarded amply. Oh, and don't let the dorky cover photo fool you. These guys know how to throw down. This is as close to "shredding" as classical music ever gets.
