iTunes Review
There are moments on the Civil Wars’ Barton Hollow that recall the mournful balladry of traditional Appalachian folk, as well as more contemporary explorations of heartache by the likes of Buddy and Julie Miller. Most of all, the duo turns its first full-length release into a sustained ode to the pleasures and torments of love. Singer/songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White offer finely wrought lyrics in settings that suggest both 19th-century parlor music and rougher, rootsier strains. “Poison & Wine” serves as the keynote for this set, applying the duo’s exquisite vocal harmonies to an aria of romantic martyrdom. Tracks like “To Whom It May Concern,” “Girl With the Red Balloon” and “Birds of a Feather” likewise caress emotional scars with a rueful tenderness. The album’s sonic extremes range from the wailing, blues-drenched tones of the title track to the genteel instrumental ambiance of “The Violet Hour.” Throughout, producer Charlie Peacock sparingly surrounds Williams and White with crystalline acoustic guitars, moody pianos, and elegant strings.
Customer Reviews
They have done it.
The Civil Wars are an interesting animal. They came out of nowhere and blew our minds with Poison & Wine, and their chemistry is something not seen frequently in music nowadays (with seldom exceptions of Gary Lightbody and Martha Wainwright, etc.). The album Barton Hollow has been one of the most anticipated releases of the past year for many in the Independent/Folk music scene, and they certainly didn't disappoint. The music released on this album is so sincere to the hearts of the artists, they remind many of what actual songs sound like. In a world where "feeling so fly like a G6" and countless other songs about how wonderful alcohol is are the songs that tops charts, groups like The Civil Wars are a beacon of hope to the music industry. Produced by Grammy Award winning Charlie Peacock (who is quite the musician himself), the beautiful melodies and lyrics warm the soul and put a tear in the eye of the listener, proving again that music is most certainly not dead. Not while these two have anything to say about it.
Refreshing
In an era of repetitive songs I hear on the radio, I want to thank The Civil Wars for showing the true capacities of music. The amazing sound that the duo produces is unlike anything I have ever heard. The lyrics are soul piercing, and the music is so refreshing to me. Barton Hollow is a testament to music, creativity, passion, and raw talent.
Amazing as Expected
This album has been a long time coming, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. The Civil Wars debut full length project displays the masterfully simple yet exquisite song writing that fans have become accustomed to. This will be a great introduction for new fans, and a welcome addition to the budding library of longtime fans. All in all, it does a good job of capturing the essence of their live shows. Joy Williams and John Paul White know what they are musically and what direction they are going, and it shows in a really quality album. Buy it and go to one of their shows!
