Album Review
Seven Storey Mountain has hardcore roots and from the start it is fairly obvious. The first song, "So Soon," drives hard out of the gate, slows, then kicks in again. Seven Storey Mountain can best be thought of as a band with a rough guitar sound on the exterior for those who like their music a little abrasive, but not too much so. Frontman Lance Lammers has a crusty, thick vocal sound, but shows diversity and range throughout Based on a True Story. Underneath that jarring guitar/vocal tandem are singalong choruses, hook-laden guitar parts, and catchy beats. Check out the song "Waste of Time" for proof of that. While comparisons could be made to the Foo Fighters, Seven Storey Mountain definitely brings its own unique stylings to the scene. The band's ability to succeed where others fail is showcased via its clever consistency. The song "Unrest" shows Seven Storey Mountain's versatility; this quiet, peaceful tune does a great job of closing out the album. Tunes like this do such an excellent job of building in the song structure that they give the listener goosebumps. Few bands can pull this off successfully. It appears Seven Storey Mountain is one of those bands that has an understanding of what it takes to write good songs. In addition to that, the band's longevity has definitely helped it solidify a proper place in the indie rock scene.
