Album Review
In the world of Euro-dance, Basshunter has distinguished himself as the emo-oriented dance producer, a master of combining the vibrant and simple sound of acts like Cascada with lyrics and singing that are more Depeche Mode or any given "Scene" band. Forget the tough title or his cocky stare on the cover, Basshunter's 2009 effort Bass Generation is filled with love and heartbreak, all packaged in thumping and bright dance tracks that are heavily influenced by vocal trance. Best of the lot, and a big international dance hit on top of it, is the opening "Every Morning," one of the few blissful numbers ("I'm a man in love/And it's glorious") where love goes right. Much of the album is as wistful as Martin Gore after a breakup, with titles like "Why," "Don't Walk Away," and "I Will Learn to Love Again" marking the saddest numbers. Those who don't have a taste for mainstream Euro-dance music will find the long track list numbing by its end, but track by track, it's easy to appreciate what a fine club craftsman this precious Romeo can be. Anyone who buys their dancefloor romance in bulk won't mind the redundancy at all, and should consider Bass Generation as a possible pre-clubbing or post-relationship soundtrack. [This album was also issued with a bonus disc of remixes and alternate version.]
Customer Reviews
Basshunter is crumbling
This album only confirms basshunter's fall from techno greatness into the stupid mediocre music he insists on making. No one wants to get all amped up listening to some guy cry about his girlfriend. This is why basshunter will never be like Benny Benassi or Tiesto. But if he thinks catering to the pre-teen/high school demographic that this album is just screaming for will get him the most fame and money, be my guest.
Disappointing
This guy used to be the best, now he's the most stereotypical pre-teen pop singer I can think of. Basshunter sold his soul to fame long ago. Might as well sign a contract with Miley Cyrus and get it over with.
nothing like the beginning
For those of you who have been with Basshunter from the beginning, you know this is not what he used to do. While the harmonics and melodics of the songs are very much like the old Basshunter, the lyrics are no where near where they used to be. For those of you who have only heard Basshunter sing in English, this is right up your alley and it's more of what you're used to. For anyone else who followed his progress through the clubs before he hit iTunes and came to the U.S., this will be a semi-disappointing, yet still satisfying album.
