Album Review

Although Meat Loaf has made several albums since Bat Out of Hell, Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell is an explicit sequel to that milestone of '70s pop culture. Reprising the formula of the original nearly to the letter, Back Into Hell is bombastic and has too much detail, thanks to the pseudo-operatic splendor of Jim Steinman's grandly cinematic songs. From the arrangements to the lengths of the tracks, everything on the album is overstated; even the album version of the hit single, "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)," is 12 minutes long. Yet that's precisely the point of this album, and is also why it works so well. No other rock & roller besides Meat Loaf could pull off the humor and theatricality of Back Into Hell and make it seem real. In that sense, it's a worthy successor to the original.

For Love

For some reason, people ask me – and I’m not kidding – “What is it that Meat Loaf won’t do for love?” So here’s the list: HE WON’T: * Lie to you (and that's a fact) * Never forget the way you feel right now, oh no, no way * Forgive himself if you don't go all the way tonight * Ever do it better than he does it with you (so long, so long) * Ever stop dreaming of you every night of his life (no way) * Forget everything and “see that it's time to move on” * Let it all turn to dust so we'll all fall down * Be screwing around For those of you really curious about the inner workings of his heart and level of commitment, here’s what he will, in fact, do for love… HE WILL: * Run right into Hell and back * take a vow and seal a pact * be there til the final act * do anything you've been dreaming of * Raise you up and help you down * Get you right out of this Godforsaken town * Make it all a little less cold * Hold you sacred and hold you tight * Colorize your life because you’re so sick of black and white * make it all a little less old * make you some magic with his own two hands * build you an emerald city from grains of sand * give you something you can take home * cater to every fantasy you got * hose you down with holy water if you get too hot * take you places you've never known *all items listed are from the Meat Loaf song "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" from the album Bat Out of Hell 2

An ambience created...and enjoyed

I am not keen on writing reviews, often times they are just silly portals for people who like to use big words they may or may not understand, and metaphors that are often tired and lacking inspiration. Well, that said and done, forgive me for my hypocritical analysis of one of Meat Loaf's most splendid albums to date. Like a dark and mysterious fairytale, as I stated, the tone is set immediatly with the opening track, though a bit long, it hits all the right chords - musically and emotionally. Not to be missed, Life Is A Lemon... is by far one of the best songs to sing at the top of your lungs while chugging beers on a Friday night after one more brutal week at work. If that doesn't hook you, just take a listen to Everything Louder Than Everything Else, or the morbidly funny Wasted Youth. For the gentler spirit, the strangely romantic Rock 'n Roll Dreams Come Through and the intense Objects in the Rear View Mirror are perfect compliments to the hard hitting rock of many songs on the album. A great choice for a closer, Lost Boys and Golden Girls is complimented very well by the illustrations in the jewel case, and you can't help but sigh as the last note ends the album and you are forced to leave the magical world created by a magnificant voice and a superior work of art. Of course, you could always just hit repeat and dive right back in.

An Amazing Album

What couldn't you say about this album... It really is a great piece of work. Meat Loaf has the chops and the lyrics to make this a must buy.

Marvin Lee Aday is a singer and occasional actor who, for reasons never definitively answered, has recorded under the name Meat Loaf. In all likelihood a childhood nickname, the tag stuck, and many puns followed as the performer — who tipped the scales at well over 300 pounds — became one of the biggest chart acts of the 1970s before enjoying a commercial renaissance two decades later. Meat Loaf was born in Dallas, TX. The product of a family of gospel singers, he moved to Los Angeles...
