where's the intensity, the fire?

I have been listening to ( and loving) Placebo for about 12 years now and have always looked forward to each successive album with baited breath in anticipation. Having amassed nearly all the singles and b-sides, and all the albums, i can say that there is typically an intensity to thier music, that perfectly matches Brians vocal style. Even thier instrumentals, like "bullet proof cupid" have this blazing intensity to them, that has always captivated me. Naturally i was excited to hear about this new release . I attempted to download it on the release date but Itunes was having problems. I then raced out to the record store and bought a copy there. Sadly, this record is a disappointment. Placebo's intensity and fire seems to have drained away, and we are left with downtempo numbers that lack the insightful, biting lyrics we know and love, and are replaced with this sort of wistful repetition of the chorus on most songs. They all seem content to plod along and there isnt any sense of identity to the songs they all kind of sound the same. Sounding different is why i fell in love with these guys in the first place. The songs all remind me of a cross between "Centerfolds" and "The Crawl", but less interesting than either. There are no blazing passionate songs on this record to be found. The music is just generic, Brians clever wordplay is gone and he sounds content to repeat the choruses over and over and "Battle for the Sun" is just structured like a nursery rhyme. Of course there has been a lineup change , and while i cant say that that is the reason for the direction this record went in, who knows, maybe Stephen took the fire with him. I would strongly adivse that you listen to this prior to buying, its a bit of a repetitious, and sadly, boring record, from a group who are capable of delivering much more clever songwriting and conveying staggering emotion than this. Placebo lost this battle.

Repetitive and annoying

Placebo is by far one of my favorite bands, and I have been looking forward to this album for over a year. After listening to the album I feel incredibly disapointed. Brian Molko is a great lyricist, but this album is nothing but a mess of redundancy. I mean all these song do is repeat the melody line over and over. Its like the band had writers block or something. This is hands down the worst Placebo album.

Biography

Formed: 1994 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Due to their penchant for androgynous attire/makeup and raw, punky guitar riffs, Placebo have been described by some as a glam version of Nirvana. The multinational band was formed by singer/guitarist Brian Molko (part Scottish and American descent, but raised in England) and Swedish bassist Stefan Olsdal. Both members had previously attended the same school in Luxembourg, but they didn't cross paths properly until 1994 in London, England. Briefly called Ashtray Heart and influenced by the likes...
