Album Review

Alterna-ska seemed to be the craze among rock fans circa 1996, and the Detroit band the Suicide Machines is one of the best the genre has to offer. On their second release for Hollywood, Battle Hymns, the band continues to slink through ska and slam the listener with full-throttle punk. Although the album contains a total of 22 selections, it only lasts for a duration of barely over 30 minutes (the shortest song being the four-second "Punck," and while the two minutes and 19 seconds of "Give" last the longest). But the shorter songs are often just as good — "Hating Hate," "Face Another Day," "Confused," "Empty Room," "Step One," and countless others will easily do the trick. Singer Jason Navarro sounds similar to Rancid's Tim Armstrong at times, but it's not a ripoff, it's due to both being able to perfect their "vocals with attitude" approach just right. This is the kind of music that is best experienced live in a sweaty punk club, with slam dancers and crowd surfers flailing along, but Battle Hymns definitely does have its moments.

Amazing

This cd is the suicide machines is awesome and only 2nd best to destruction by definiton. This cd blends ska, punk, and a some hardcore to provide a nice very un-boring selection of songs. Even though all the songs are short they all have something special about them, some get you angry, some get you mellowed out. All in all pretty good, but get Destruction By Definition first and if you like that then definetly get this

Awesome ska

This album is great for any ska-punk fan. The songs are really short but they are still really good. Just listening to this album makes me want to get up and skank around the room. but that would look weird.

True ska

A true ska punk fan will love this band with no questions asked

Although many mistake alterna-ska punkers the Suicide Machines as being from California, where most of the genre's bands come from, they're in fact Detroit natives. Starting off in the early '90s, the quartet was founded by Jason Navarro (vocals) and Dan Lukacinsky (guitar/vocals), who saw some members come and go before recording their first demo in 1993 with Derek Grant on drums and Jason Brake on bass. The Suicide Machines did their first national dates the following year and by late 1994 Royce...
