Album Review

About as subtle as a Jerry Bruckheimer action sequence, composer Brian Tyler's score for the Aliens vs. Marines pre-summer blockbuster Battle: Los Angeles successfully walks the line between fist-pumping popcorn romp bombast and painfully serious military melodrama. Tyler, who has honed his craft on similarly themed flicks like Constantine, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, and Sylvester Stallone's 2008 Rambo reboot, treats the subject matter like dogma, resulting in a highly entertaining, old-fashioned orchestral soundtrack that should appeal to fans of Hans Zimmer, John Powell, and Harry Gregson-Williams.

Song from the trailer......

The electronic piece you are looking for which played on the trailer for "Battle: LA" is "The Sun's Gone Dim and the Sky's Turned Black" by Johann Johannsson, and it IS available on iTunes. Many times a film will use what is called a "temp track" which is music to score the trailer. The y do this for many reasons, one of which could be that the film's composer simply isn't finished with the score yet..this is mainly due to the fact that trailers for a film are released, in some cases, up to a year before the film is released. In many cases, the film may not even have a composer yet, so the producers select music which embodies the "feel" of the film they wish to convey to audiences. This same thing happened with the trailer for "the social network"...the hauntingly beautiful girls chior version of "Creep" is by Scala and Kolacny Brothers, but was not heard at any time in the film itself, nor is it on the score CD. When you hear a piece of music on a trailer, just do a Google or Yahoo search...enter the name of the film and add "trailer music"..chances are pretty good you will be able to find out what it is and chances are equally good that iTunes will have it available. Just tryin' to help!!

Classic Brian Tyler

This soundtrack is a good ol' fashioned-turn-up-the-volume-as-loud-as-you-can-till-your-ears-bleed score from Brian Tyler. Nothing fancy here. It has a lot of heavy beats and heroic themes. This is just something to get your adrenaline pumping. And it is awesome.

Epic and Moving

I read posts about how great the action music is in this score. I agree it is impressive but my favorite parts are the stirring choral and impassioned pieces like "Elegy" and "Marines Don't Quit." Also the opening track has a powerful epic quality to it with a lot of heart. The themes are very moving and memorable. I really love the voices and the dreamlike guitar (reminds me of Sigur Ros) along with the navy sounding choir and beautiful orchestra make this a great score. I can't wait to see this movie when it comes out.
