Brilliant Album

This is far and away Gregory's best album to date. The songwriting is incredibly mature and the production is rich with gorgeous melodic layers. I was fortunate enough to get a pre-release copy of the album and for weeks now it's been in daily rotation on my iPod. I just don't tire of it. There's not a single song that I don't like, but standouts for me are "Cathedrals", "Devotion", "Broken Through", and "Stay". If you're new to Gregory's music, this is the album to get. If you've been a fan for awhile, you certainly won't be disappointed with this latest effort. Battler could very well prove to be the big breakthrough that this very talented independent artist deserves.

'Battler' worthy of listening to all day

I only recently discovered Gregory Douglass, having his self-titled album recommended to me by the iTunes store (and then discovering "Pseudo-Rotary," via "Quiet in the Shade," on Pandora.com), and have discovered that I could pretty much listen to his music all day long. Having spent most of a Christmas iTunes gift card on his stuff, I was thrilled by the idea of a new album so soon, and the album is quite well done. The simple piano on the first track gives you one of those caught-up-in-the-sound musical catharsis moments Douglass does so well. "Cathedrals" is a lyrical standout -- but, though Douglass is good with lyrics, one listens to him for his inventive instrumental harmonies, and "Battler" doesn't disappoint. From the strings on "Devotion" to the guest vocals from Anais Mitchell on "Sad" -- and even in harmonizing only with his own doubled voice for most of "No Apology" --" the harmonies are in full force and well-done. "Day of the Battler," from which this album takes its name, also gives us our token departure from his typical style, this time reminiscent of the Beatles' "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite," but infused with a more mellow tone that's all Douglass' own.

AMAZING...period!

This is a great body of work and exemplifies Gregory's tremendous growth as a human and as an artist. Put it in, press play and enjoy! There's something for every emotion you're feeling. Someday soon, the world will realize that they've been sleeping on this artist for FAR TOO LONG. He's the real deal.
