I'm In Want (of Meghan Tonjes)...
A folk-pop collection of songs dealing with relationships, love, and self-love, Be In Want is musical medicine for the broken-hearted. “The End” (ironically the first track of the album) is a meditation on healing and moving on from a love lost. The humorous yet heartbreaking “She’ll Make You” is sung from the perspective of a woman in love with a man engaged to someone else. “Saved” reflects Tonjes’s experiences with close-minded people she encountered while attending a Christian university. The short interlude “Anthem” is a sexy and assertive declaration of desire, and “Be In Want,” the album’s title track, chronicles the frustrations of an almost-relationship. Tonjes’s lyrics are crafted with a poetic sensibility, her melodies are addictive, and her vocal delivery is stunning: like golden ribbons of honey swirled into strong black tea, simultaneously smoky and sweet. Whether listening to her album, viewing her personal YouTube channel where she performs original music and covers for her weekly “Request Tuesdays” (and actually makes Britney Spears songs sound good), or her collaborative project, Tonjes will have you in want of more. To paraphrase “She’ll Make You”: “Nothing’s gonna stop her now / No one’s gonna hold her down.”

A Five Star Album
I discovered Meghan Tonjes on YouTube shortly after she created a video response to popular YouTuber, Tyler Oakley. In Tonjes' response video, she covered Taylor Swift's "Love Story." The minute she opened her mouth to sing, I was blown away. After the video ended, I immediately went to her YouTube page and listened to other excellent covers she had posted. Then, I proceeded to listen to her original work. The first original song I was introduced to was the haunting "She'll Make You." On the album, Tonjes offers the song in two styles. The first (track 3) is most familiar to her fans with its funky guitar work and the beautiful vocal harmonies. The second (track 9) is a "stripped" version where Tonjes is accompanied on piano by a friend, Jake Lyon. The song is brought down in tempo and is stripped of its harmonies. The result is almost a different song as the listener is left with only piano chords and her voice. "Be In Want," as a whole, is an album you can put into your cd player and just let it play. Each song brings a different experience whether Tonjes is singing about lost love, death, religion, or a favorite television show. Not only is Tonjes a talented singer and guitarist, but she is also a talented lyricist. She is also easily accessible as she has put herself out there on both her personal YouTube channel, tonjesml, and her collaborative channel, Project Lifesize.
