iTunes Review

On previous releases the Weepies fought back creeping gloom with hopeful words and honeyed melodies. This time, Deb Talan and Steve Tannen display a more positive outlook, though even their happiest songs carry a wistful undercurrent. Be My Thrill may reflect the couple’s status as proud parents – certainly, the baby-talk lyrics in “Red Red Rose” and the tender tunefulness of “Not a Lullaby” sound very child-friendly. Musically, Be My Thrill shows an affection for the simple elegance of pre-Beatles pop, with “They’re In Love, Where Am I?” achieving a particular grace. Talan’s girlish-but-wise vocals catch the right sense of yearning in “Hummingbird” and strike a teasing stance in the title number. Tannen steps out on such quirky tracks as “How Do You Get High?,” a playful number reminiscent of ZZ Top (honest!). The wry sense of acceptance pervading “Empty Your Hands” may sum up the album’s attitude overall. The Weepies may have found a measure of contentment, but Be My Thrill shows they haven’t surrendered to mindless bliss.

This album will make any day sunny...

Somewhat of a departure from their two previous albums, Say I Am You and Hideaway, Be My Thrill presents a mood that is less melancholy and wistful, but rather is more optimistic. Songs like 'Hummingbird' and 'Red Red Rose' move along, taking their time and never yelling to get their point across - it never gets any louder than the opening guitar riff in 'I Was Made For Sunny Days'. In addition to the 'Sunny Days' and 'Be My Thrill' singles, the highlights here are 'Add My Effort', 'How Do You Get High?', and 'Hard to Please', which may be the most bittersweet ballad the Weepies have ever released. While this album is less consistent than their previous efforts (and contains no instant classics like 'World Spins Madly On' or 'Can't Go Back Now'), it still will be a 'thrill' to any Weepies fan. Also, note to Steve: you should be singing more!

Favorite of the year

I've been a Deb Talan fan since she lived and played in Portland OR 15 years ago...and even though she disses my beloved rainy clime ("I made due with grey, but I didn't stay... ") still I love her work with Steve after all these years and think this album is their best yet. Great melodies, sweet lyrics, sun and shadow (if no outright rain.) Happy I got this album in '10, and I recommend it to you as well!

Singer/songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen, both of whom had released solo material before banding together to form folk-pop duo the Weepies, first met at one of Tannen's shows in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At the time, Tannen was touring in support of his debut record, Big Señorita. Mutual admirers of each other's music, the two musicians started writing songs together, and soon the Weepies' whimsical, acoustic-based sound took shape. The pair released an independent album, 2003's Happiness, before...
