Album Review

Vanessa Carlton probably couldn't have happened without Alicia Keys, but that doesn't mean they sound the same. Both artists are preternaturally talented and write on keyboards, sounding much older than their years. The difference is, Carlton pretty much revels in her advanced years, creating a record that recalls the lush ambition of Keys, but also the soul-searching of Fiona Apple and the precise intricacies of Rick Wakeman. Certainly, this wasn't something she planned to evoke, but the end result is pretty impressive all the same, because it's so well crafted, from both Carlton and her producer, Ron Fair, who doesn't stop her from taking leaps that could potentially prove embarrassing. And there are embarrassing moments on her debut, Be Not Nobody, the most notable of those is a ham-fisted, melodramatic cover of the Stones' "Paint It, Black," which for all the world feels like a single dictated by the studio. That's the nadir of the album, but the rest is charmingly ambitious and often quite accomplished. Take the lead single, "A Thousand Miles" — as it moves from its solo piano opening to bombastic orchestral-backed choruses, the result isn't overwhelming, it's sweet, multi-layered, and appealing. And most of her debut album follows that lead, often overflowing with soaring strings, intimate pianos, crooned vocals, and pretty melodies, yet it all gels because Carlton shows the potential of a songwriter who can convey her emotions through her songcraft. Sure, some of Be Not Nobody is naïve, but much of it's well crafted and nearly all of it is endearing; it's a rare debut that is quite enjoyable in its own right yet is almost more enticing because of what it suggests that she could do next.

Be Not Nobody: Vanessa Carlton

I have loved Vanessa Carlton's music since I was like seven, but I never knew who "really" sang it since I didn't really care anyways. Anyways, I sort of forgot about her for a while, but then I got my i-pod and I had like a little "reunion" with my favorite music. I stumbled across Vanessa Carlton's innocent, peaceful, pretty, soothing voice, just like before. Only, I "knew" who sang the songs and this time I "did" care. I then have pretty much all of her songs on my i-pod and I am happy again, just like when I was little while listening to the radio (waiting for her songs to come on), but now I have her songs 24/7! But you don't really hear her songs on the radio anymore, instead, you listen to "My Humps" (by Black Eyed Peas) and all of that junk now. You don't hear an innocent, peaceful, pretty, soothing voice anymore. Imagine all of the other people that need a reunion with Vanessa Carlton's music, besides me!

A Great Start for a Promising Young Talent

Starting off a career with a top 5 album, a smash hit single, and three Grammy nominations is a dream come true for this small town piano wo-man from Milford, PA. With her mother as a piano teacher, Vanessa was around music her whole life. At the age of 14, Vanessa set off to New York City in search of a ballet career, yet found music to be her true passion. A Thousand Miles might not be her most musically profound piece, but don't let that pop vibe distract from this album in its entirety. Along with its other two singles, Pretty Baby and Ordinary Day, it is chock full of musical genius. I particularly love Wanted because of its chaotic yet smooth vibe. Twilight is another favorite. It combines a simplistic melody with meaningful lyrics. All in all, Vanessa’s music is different than most out there. She has something to say, her music isn’t just note and word, its more than that. She has a message she wants to convey, so LISTEN... ...she really knows what she’s talking about

Real Musician

That's right, she's a classically trained piano player. This really comes out on "Wanted"! It's refreshing to see that there are actually SOME talented musicians actually making it out in the pop world. This young woman really sings with passion! I would recommend anything she puts out.

Along with Michelle Branch and Nelly Furtado, Vanessa Carlton helped usher in a new era of female songwriters during the early 2000s. "A Thousand Miles," her first single, was one of the biggest songs of 2002, topping the pop charts in America and cracking the Top Ten in England. None of her subsequent singles came close to matching that song's success, but Carlton continued releasing albums...
