Infectious, Melodic Dance Track

Vince Clarke and Andy Bell have a knack for writing melodic, tuneful, memorable dance-pop anthems. "Be With You" is one of these. Forget the Moto Blanco Mixes--they just cover up the original artist's production, and they're the kind of rubbish you can only listen to when you're grinding against some stranger on the dance-floor after five Coronas and a hit of E. The single is great because of the catchy, danceable, singable a-side and its glorious extended version--a longer, drawn out version of an already good thing. It's also a great buy because of the b-side "Never Let You Down", a chugging dance track which is sort of weird and different in a cool way. This last track even has Andy singing in a different, sort of exotic-sounding language. Definitely a must-hear and a must-buy.

Great Song, iffy EP

The album version of this song remains the best version, rendering much of what's here superfluous. The Good: "Never Let You Down" has great synthwork by Vince Clarke, but Andy's voice sounds dry in the high falsetto parts. The "Love is Coming" remix is a nice expansion of the song, but unexciting. The Starshapes Remix is great--the best thing on here. These are the three tracks to buy. The Radio mix dulls the single down, the Moto Blanco mixes are generic--and the pastiche that takes the original vocal and puts it over a violin and guitar backing in the Acoustic Version is quite simply awful. But, again, the original album version is Erasure at their poppy best.

Classic Dancy Love Ballad

"Be With You" is a fabulous track off of "Tomorrow's World" with the "Love is Coming" extentended version just amazing with a slightly Kate Bush-like opening (think "Wow")...In fact if you buy nothing else get the "radio version," "Love is coming," and the "Acoustic Version" versions - the Moto Blanco remixes are frankly boring and sadly take away from Andy and Vince's music as opposed to adding something.

Additionally, "Never Let You Down" is a good B-side with a Yazoo sound in tempo, music, and when Andy sings in the lower registers and some very interesting stuff beginning at the 2:22 mark. My only reservation though is Andy's unusally flat falsetto that makes this sound more like a demo.

Biography

Formed: 1985 in London, England

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Following the disbandment of the short-lived synth pop group Yazoo, former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke formed Erasure in 1985 with singer Andy Bell. Like Yaz and Depeche Mode, Erasure were a synth-based group, but they had stronger dance inclinations, as well as a sharper, more accessible sense of pop songcraft, than either of Clarke's previous bands. Furthermore, Erasure had the flamboyantly eccentric Andy Bell — one of the first openly gay performers in pop music — as their focal...
