After a three-year break from releases following 2002's Electric Circus, conscious rapper Common returned with a heightened profile - thanks in part to an anti-AIDS public-service TV ad - and the album Be. Scaled back from the sprawl of Circus, the album has the intimate feel that best serves its creator. At the same time, it hardly lacks for street wisdom and club credibility. "Go!" is at once a laid-back head-nodder and a lustful paean to sex, while "Chi-City" both challenges the prevailing hip-hop culture and boastfully nominates Common as its savior. Be ends with a pensive nod to Gil Scott-Heron, borrowing his album title "It's Your World" for a reminiscence of earlier days and a hopeful promise for the future.

Common is a genius, Kanye's beats are beautiful

I'm sure there are a lot of you out there who never listened to Common's older stuff, and probably never will. But whatever. Be is an amazing album, and much more appealing to the mainstream ear than anything Common has done before. True fans, however, know that Common's amazing lyricism can be found on anything he has done over the past decade. When it comes down to it, this album is essentially flawless, and Kanye's trademark 'soul beats' compliment Common's very classical and introspective rhyming style beautifully. If i were ever asked to recommend a rapper to be elected President of the United States, my first and only choice would be Common Sense. "I wonder if the spirits of Bob Marley and Haile Selassie watch me as the cops be tryin' to pop and lock me. They cocky, plus they mentality is Nazi. The way they're treatin' blacks, I wanna snap like papparazzi."

Lost for words

This is nothing short of one of the greatest albums that hip hop has ever produced. When I was going through back surgeory this album helped me get through the pain of getting back on my feet. Painting pictures of Chicago through songs like "Chi-city" and "The corner" creating epic tales of relation ships through songs like "Testify" and inspiring childern and adults through songs like"It's your world pts. 1 & 2" I can not express in enough words about how great I think this album is.

Absolutely Incredible...

When I was about twelve I had come to an almost sudden realization that the world around me was falling apart, I heard nothing but politicians saying this and that about Iraq, saw women degrading themselves for entertainment in music videos, and the rappers who exploited them and Hip-Hop for their own gain and amusement. I started to become bitter and angry not at just the rappers and politicians, but the whole culture in general, Hip-Hop used to be a way for me to connect with my people, all people, now I began to hate it. Then fatefuly my moms saw I was sad and was looking for a way to cheer me up and took me to the store to buy a CD. I thought "Great more "music"." but what I found that day was Common's "Be" a timeless masterpiece that I listen to continuously to this day (July 5, 2007) Be transcends music and even Hip-Hop it's a work of art that will live forever, no track on this album isn't poetic and beautifuly produced by Kanye West and the late LEGENDARY Jay Dilla this LP saved my view of Hip-Hop and gave me a rolemodel to look up to and only hope to inspire someone the way he inspired me.
