Album Review

This pairing is a sort of natural, capturing the Beach Boys at the end of Brian Wilson's tenure as a regular performing member of the group, and at the peak of their late-'60s period, when they were making great music that was not only not getting heard but wasn't even being written about. The December 1968 performance was one of the best they ever recorded, and it gets better here, with a much closer ambience with scintillating detail in the singing. The inclusion of "Don't Worry Baby" from 1964 and "Heroes and Villains" from a late-1967 concert fills in a couple of major holes from both ends of the group's 1960s history (and why they don't just release Lei'd in Hawaii, the intended album of that complete concert, is anyone's guess). [This compilation disc first appeared in 1991 in an adequate CD edition, but the 2001 reissue is a significant improvement over that earlier version. Released in 24-bit sound, it compensates for the inadequacies of the 1964 live recording, moving the instruments about as far into the foreground as they ever will be and giving the vocals the best airing they'll ever receive.]

Mr

I was 13 when I received "Beach Boys Concert" as a Xmas gift 1964. I still have the record and listened to parts of it for the first time in...a LONG time, the other day. Uh...this sounds a heck of a lot better!!! Oh...and they toss in a '67 concert from London as well!!! It's my lucky day!

The real gem here is the '69 show, IMO. A great mix of Pet Sounds, 20/20 and Smiley Smile-era plus a couple of early hits for the nostalgia. The live cut of "Aren't You Glad" is much better than the studio version, and the live "Do It Again" is incredibly energetic. "God Only Knows" is just plain awesome.

The '64 show is a bit more problematic - there are some fun moments on there, but it's lightweight. Definitely a Mike Love - "formula" show - not enough of the great introspective stuff Brian was starting to write. My favorite track is the previously unreleased "Don't Worry Baby".

Great!

I love this album. Both concerts are great! The only complaint I have is that "fun fun fun" and " I get around" are not performed live, and are just edited to sound live (which they don't because I wouldn't be complaining if they did)

Beginning their career as the most popular surf band in the nation, the Beach Boys finally emerged by 1966 as America's preeminent pop group, the only act able to challenge (for a brief time) the overarching success of the Beatles with both mainstream listeners and the critical community. From their 1961 debut with the regional hit "Surfin," the three Wilson brothers — Brian, Dennis, and Carl — plus cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine constructed the most intricate, gorgeous harmonies...
