Freaked Out and Loving It
With little more than a rhythm machine and an extraordinary hairdo, Beardo is reshaping the music landscape and gaining legions of frenetic, disillusioned followers. A seemingly impossible mix of cali-rock, punk, pop, protest-era keyboards, and just plain screaming vocals overlaid with some digital tweaks, Beardo’s self-titled offering somehow manages to arrive at the sublime. His best songs run with a subtle counter-current to the overall lyrical thrust (Girls ‘n Pills, Alien Man) and with his stoner attitude, irreverence, and unflinching self-deprecation Beardo unfailingly delivers tracks that are at once distressing and righteously enjoyable. If you have ever been plastered before dawn, stagger-dancing next to a few die-hards screaming along to lyrics that are the polar opposite of your value system, you will not be disappointed by this album. What’s more, you may rediscover the long lost freak buried deep inside you. And that’s a good thing.
