Album Review

The great thing about Garbage — the thing that nobody wants to mention — is that they are veterans, from frontwoman Shirley Manson to the three studio pros who play the instruments. They slogged through the trenches of alt-rock in the '80s, whether it was in the U.S. or the U.K., and they came together at the precise moment in the '90s when they could fashion modern-sounding music with a keen eye to the present and modern. They consciously picked up elements from shoegazing, trip-hop, and indie rock — anything sonically interesting in the underground, crafting them together with skill and a keen commercial eye. On their third record, Beautiful Garbage, that's more evident than ever, from how they approximate contemporary R&B with the sultry "Androgyny," or the Minneapolis new wave bubblegum funk of "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)," or the bluesy PJ Harvey strut of "Silence Is Golden." It's all the more evident because this has a shiny, sugary, unabashedly pop coating, an element that Garbage clearly revel in, as well as should the listener. This is every bit as enticingly postmodern as their other albums, and it sounds distinctly Garbage — there are elements of My Bloody Valentine crashing up against Tricky, post-Madchester dance, jangle pop, goth stance, and classic pop — but they seem less like magpies, more themselves, which means Beautiful Garbage is a more consistent record. It's unlikely to storm the charts like their first two records, especially since there aren't standout singles like on the earlier albums, but overall the record works better, perhaps their best album.

Beautifulgarbage by Garbage is in my top 10 of favorite albums of all-time. Released in 2001, this album was completely ignored by the mass public but the critcs loved it and so do I. Shirley Manson and the boys are at the top of their game on this album. The songs are catchy, personal, and just brilliant. There is not one bad song here, Shirley was my rock idol growing up and she still is, gorgeous woman inside and out. Download this today! Best song: Silence is Golden.

Garbage hits all the bases

Like a little variety in your music? Instead of putting 5 or 6 cds in the changer, or making a new playlist for your iPod just go ahead and listen to "Beautifulgarbage." Want something with a rap/rock beat? Take a listen to "Shut Your Mouth." Into a Spectorish wall of sound feel? Choose "Can't Cry These Tears" and hit play. Straight up power pop? "Parade" Breaking Up the Girl" and the stick-in-your-head "Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go)" will do the trick. Ballads? "Cup of Coffee" "Drive You Home" & "So Like a Rose" are at your disposal. Check out "Silence Is Golden" for a bit of a quasi-industrial kick. There is a new wave slant to "Androgyny" and the oddly enchanting (Britney Spears on steroids?) "Untouchable." Round this set out with the trademark Garbage sound of "Nobody Loves You" and the oh-so-sexy rock of "Till
The Day That I Die" and you have an amazing set of songs. The ability to rub up against so many styles and sounds and then blend them all together is what makes
the band AND this release so stellar.

Amazing

This album stands on its own, I feel that all of the bands albums are things that should be looked at on their own. I love this CD, it just grabs you from the first track and takes you on a wonderful ride, there is such talent in this band!
