Album Review

Jesse McCartney used to be a part of turn-of-the-century teen pop also-rans Dream Street, a group who made a few waves in 2001, just as the renaissance of 1999/2000 was starting to draw to a close. Like other teenage showbiz kids, McCartney covered his bases after the group's demise, signing with Hollywood Records just before he landed a role on the 2004 WB show Summerland, which just happened to be scheduled to hit the airwaves not long after his debut solo album, Beautiful Soul, hit the stores in September 2004. This kind of cross-platform positioning was commonplace midway through the 2000s — Britney Spears may have started it, but Hilary Duff perfected it, rising up through Disney TV as the lead of the delightful sitcom Lizzie McGuire before having a number one album in 2003 with her first grand-scale pop album, Metamorphosis. That's the path that McCartney and his producers have chosen, and Beautiful Soul is a cross between Metamorphosis and Justin Timberlake's solo debut, Justified. It's targeted at the preteens who made Hilary a star, so it's light and cheerful, but it has the sleek, sultry grooves that made Justified a blockbuster, which means that McCartney has a chance not only to flaunt a little maturity, he's given a direction where he can grow. While some of the material here is a bit generic (the ballads are a particular weakness), the songs that work are shockingly good. The by-the-books teen pop songs, like the lead single, "She's No You," are engaging, but it's the tracks that draw deeply from Timberlake that really get the album moving — the Robbie Nevil-written "Get Your Shine On" nearly trumps "Rock Your Body" as a successful update of Michael Jackson's Off the Wall. McCartney is still a teenager, still figuring out how to control his voice and use its sweet thinness as an advantage — for anybody who watched Bravo's brilliant series Showbiz Moms & Dads, he can't help but recall a Shane Klingensmith with talent — but these songs suggest that he will be able to figure that out, and it's the songs that make this album a welcome surprise.

Incredible..Breathtaking...Simply Magnificent

This CD is magnificent. Forget any critical review you've ever read about it. Jesse McCartney may just seem like a Justin or Aaron wannabe, but he's far from it. He's got such wonderful, individual talent, and in this CD, it really shines. His ballads such as "Take Your Sweet Time" (my personal fav.) and "Why Don't You Kiss Her?" are heartfelt and wonderfully written with beautiful music and great vocals by Mr. McCartney. And of course, everyone loves the awesome pop tracks "Beautiful Soul" and "She's No You." Not to mention the techno "That Was Then" and the Michael Jackson spinoff "Get Your Shine On." "Come To Me" and "The Stupid Things" are adorable and beautifully touching songs that will definitly pull at a couple of your heart strings. Almost all of his songs are positive and reassuring, and I think that's what everyone loves about him and his album. Not to mention the obvious: his good looks, charming and sweet attitude, and flat out awe-inspiring talent. However, his voice is slightly whiny at times. But that's one MINOR MINOR flaw, because you'll be totally mezmerized by his amazing voice range and control that you'll forget all about it! And it's very rare he'll sound whiny in this album. One last word: If you are a not a fan of happy, totally cool "Everything-In-The-World-Is-Great" pop music, than this is not the CD for you. But if you're that kind of person... Then buy the CD, and let Jesse's "beautiful soul" shine!!

Unbelievable!

Jesse McCartney started out acting and singing at a very young age. Because his parents were Broadway people, he had a lot more experience on performing than most people. Anybody that can sing as well as he can live is very GOOD. I never knew his face when I first heard one of his songs(Because You live). If you are worried that Jesse McCartney is just a 'pretty face', you should look out for his coming up live only album. But I have watched his DVD, and his live performances are just as good as the recorded versions. Jesse McCartney was involved in the wirting of the songs 'She's No You', 'Get Your Shine On', 'That Was Then' and 'What's Your Name?'. The lyrics are strong, and the tunes are very catchy. If you doubt it, you should try it. You'll end up knowing that Jesse McCartney was just fortunate enought to have born with a 'pretty face' AND his super talent.

i love him

he has a really good noice and he's a really good actor. I cant believe SOME PEOPLE i've read can't stand him. I think he is really sweet cause i met him. I wish iTunes will get more music videos of him.
