iTunes Review
Gungor — formerly known as the Michael Gungor Band — matches spiritual passion with artistic ambition on their sophomore release Beautiful Things. This eclectic Christian quartet revivifies the praise music genre with an unusually broad sonic palette, often building from quiet acoustic meditations to dramatic rock flourishes within a single track. Michael Gungor’s wonder-struck vocals are equal to the reverent themes of his lyrics — on songs like “Dry Bones” and the title number he rises from soft murmurs to full-throated declarations of faith. Dynamic arrangements make the folk-tinged “You Have Me” and the electronica-colored “The Earth Is Yours” into mood-shifting symphonic experiences. “Heaven” features the vocals of Israel Houghton to help underscore its simmering blues feel. The album’s most affecting moment is “Late Have I Loved You,” a subdued yet intense hosanna carried by Gungor’s voice and piano. More than a heartfelt worship offering, Beautiful Things is a work of art, rendered with sensitivity and imagination.
Customer Reviews
Really? Wow.
I get SO tired of worship music that's constricted by lackluster musicianship, overpolished production, and words that I've heard a million times before - you know the songs I'm talking about. I call them "worship mad-libs." So I'm always on the lookout for fresh, honest, singable worship songs with theological integrity. I had NO expectations coming into this album, but HOT DOG. This album (1) has wildly original, inventive, but also USABLE worship songs, (2) amazing talent displayed by the artists on the album, and (3) the feel of an actual, cohesive album. The songs work together, and it sounds like the people involved ENJOYED recording it. I can't recommend this album enough.
Beginning to End
I had an amazing opportunity to be one of the first people to listen to this album and was blown away from beginning to end.
The first track 'Dry Bones' is more my personal taste (Rock/Alternative) and contains some ridiculous tom-drum action/sound.
My favorite track would be 'Late Have I Loved You' ("beauty so ancient, so new" | "You breathed your fragrance on me")... it moves me most.
Thanks Gungor for furthering 'Christian' music beyond the copycats and bringing originality.
The New Face of Worship
I had the great pleasure of experiencing Gungor as they performed this entire album (and then some) live at the Recreate Conference in Franklin, TN. From beginning to end Gungor takes you on an epic, sonic-filled journey of redemption and beauty. The title track continues to play in my head "You make beautiful things, You make beautiful things out of dust... You make beautiful things, You make beautiful things out of us." The powerful lyrics on Please Be My Strength are captivating: "Like water on the sand or grasping at the wind, I keep on falling short... Please be my strength, 'cause I don't have any more". I highly recommend this album. You must listen to it uninterrupted to get the full effect of the message and expose the beauty of the woven sounds and words. This is Michelangelo. This is da Vinci. This is Einstein. This is brilliance.
