No musical or Disney enthusiast should be without this.
2 years after they helped to revitalize animation with their Oscar-winning success on "The Little Mermaid," Composer Alan Menken and Lyricist Howard Ashman brought their unique blend of showstopping triumph to "Beauty and the Beast." Going further into the territory of an actual stage musical, the songs by Menken help to craft the story into one of the most enjoyable experiences ever. but as skillful as Alan Menken is with the music, my hat goes off to the incredible (but sadly, deceased) Howard Ashman. Ashman's lyrics are what make the film so captivating. The words flow with such ease that it's no wonder 15 years later people are still sining 'Gaston' or 'Be Our Guest.' Besides, how many lyricists would think to use the word 'expactorate?' Of interest, when the the soundtrack was first released back in 1991 (I had one of the original Audio Cassettes), the song 'Transformation' was an earlier rendition. However, it didn't seem to fit the moment, and Menken rewrote it into the final version that you can find on this album, and the finished film. The original 'Transformation' can be heard on the 2-disc Disney DVD, or the much preferred (though now out-of-print) "Music Behind the Magic."
my FAVORITE score!!!!!!(ever)
Beauty and the Beast is by far my favorite CD in the whole world (this includes everything from pop to classical to punk-rock)!!!! First, the words are very clever, and the rhymes actually make sense. Second, The singing is exemplary. Paige O'Hara has one of the most beautiful voices I know, and Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach do well too. Third, the accompaniment is powerful and motivatingly written. I love the movie, but the soundtrack is even better!!
When Disney was good....
Ah, I remember when this first came out. That was back when disney still made more good movies than not. If they could just keep making stuff as amazing as this, we would not have horrible stuff like High School Musical
