iTunes Review

Toning down its art-rock instincts, Heart adopted a leaner, tougher sound on Bebe le Strange. Ann and Nancy Wilson survived the loss of founding guitarist Roger Fisher to lead their group into the ’80s with sharpened commercial instincts. Tracks like the snappy, horn-fueled “Even It Up” and the thunderous party anthem “Strange Night” bristle with renewed energy. Even better is the title tune, a sexed-up celebration of backstage love with a searing guitar line. Heart adds some variety with a smoldering blues ballad (“Down On Me’), a bouncy piano-driven tune (“Raised On You”) and a heroic arena-rock ode (“Rockin’ Heaven Down”). Though a bit constrained here, Nancy Wilson does take a solo guitar turn with the classically styled “Silver Wheels.” Bebe le Strange represents a bridge between Heart’s more eclectic, folk-influenced early days and the radio-friendly power balladry of its ‘80s work. On its own merits, it’s a spirited, well-realized album and “Jackleg Man” is a crazed number that may be the closest thing to punk rock that Heart has ever recorded.

Idiot I-Tunes Reviews

Well...once again...the I-Tunes review makes absolutely no sense whatsoever! "Silver Wheels" was NOT a hit from this album. The two hits were "Even It Up" and the title track. "Bebe le Strange" was Heart's break-up album. The Wilson sisters had both broken up with their boyfriends, the Fisher brothers, and much of the album reflects the anger and angst of ending those long-term relationships. The album was originally released on Valentine's Day, a tongue in cheek slam by the sisters at their former boyfriends. Although this album is overall, not their best, there are bits and pieces of exceptional and classic Heart. The song "Even It Up" was a first for Heart as it employed the Tower of Power horn section and was a fairly dramatic and successful departure for the band. The song, "Sweet Darlin" is ironically, one of the group's best love songs. The song "Strange Night", although it sounds like an ode to a night of dressing in drag, is actually about a night out on the town where the sisters enterred an amateur music competition while wearing disguises. Ultimately, Bebe le Strange (the album), is about survival. It is the album that showed the world that the Wilson sisters had always been the heart of Heart and no matter what...they would survive...eventually becoming one of THE mega-bands of the 80's!

I'm with you, Dani_18!

One of their best, right after Dog and Butterfly. I disagree with the "official" review above... every song is strong, no filler. I'm jus sayin!

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are the creative spark behind Heart, a hard rock group who initially found success in the mid-'70s, only to reach greater heights after engineering a major comeback a decade later. The daughters of a Marine Corps captain, Ann (born June 19, 1950) and Nancy (born March 16, 1954) grew up in both Southern California and Taiwan before the Wilson family settled in Seattle, WA. Throughout their formative years, both were interested in folk and pop music; while Ann never took...
