Album Review

Having generated a significant buzz with their debut on the scrappy indie Lookout Records, the Dollyrots got snagged by Joan Jett and added to her own Blackheart label. Knowing that much about their history, their sophomore album is pretty much what you'd expect: it's the same tight, gleefully snotty bubblegum punk as what you heard on Eat My Heart Out, except maybe just a bit bigger and just a bit sonically fuller this time around — par for the course when a band like this starts to mature and gets the budget of an established label behind it. If you loved their debut album (and you did), then you'll love Because I'm Awesome at least as much — in part because of the ironic whimsy of the title track, in part because of the scorched-earth political patter song "A Desperate S.O.S.," in part because of the absolute crunchy perfection of "17," and in part because of the band's exhilarating appropriation of Melanie's 1970 bubblegum classic "Brand New Key." You might lose interest for a minute during the willfully goofy "Cat Calling," but you won't wander very long before being snapped back to attention. And you'll get a big kick out of the two videos included in the CD-R section. Spectacular.

review for this album, take 2

on tuesday i wrote a review for this album which, at that time, was a Partial Album. now it's a regularrrrrrrr album. =[ more work for me. but i'll write it again anyways. 1. Because I'm Awesome- Kohl's commericial song, pop song, all that junk. not the best. 3/5 2. My Best Friend's Hot- Really really good, one of my faves on this CD. 4/5 3. Out of L.A.- Good beat, not the best lyrically. not a standout track. 3/5 4. Brand New Key- It's a redo of something by someone else. i like how her voice is high during the chorus. 4/5 5. Hysteria- Best song on the album hands down. 5/5 6. A Desperate S.O.S.- Fun to sing along with. 4/5 7. Watch Me Go (Kissd Me, Killed Me)- Fun for one of those "teen angst" days. 4/5 8. This Crush- Again, fun for a "teen angst" day. 4/5 9. Cat Calling- Love this song. 5/5 10. 17- Not really a standout track. 3/5 11. Nobody Wants U- Another good song. Good for a rainy self-pity day. 4/5 12. Turn You Down- Easy to learn to lyrics, therefore it's a sing-along-in-your-car-with-the-windows-down song. 4/5 13. Tummy Turn Turn- A fun song to dance to. 4/5 Because i'm Awesome (Audio Version) by The Dollyrots- 4/5 average piece of work, nothing special. if anything, buy "Hysteria"

'Cause I'm Awesome!!

This album is okay, but Because I'm Awesome is a great song to dance to. I heard this song when I went to my friend's dance encore. The music video is really funny. I would recommend this album if you're a dancer or if you like pop or rock or if you're a rebel.

What started as a hobby for New College of Florida students (and childhood friends) Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals) and Luis Cabeza (guitar) became a full-time career when Ogden and Cabeza decided to make their band, the Dollyrots, a full-time gig in 2000.
