Album Review
One of the great things about Jeff Beck is his utter unpredictability. It's also one of the most maddening things about him, too, since it's as likely to lead to flights of genius as it is to weird detours like Beck, Bogert & Appice. It's hard to tell what exactly attracted Beck to the rhythm section of Vanilla Fudge and Cactus — perhaps he just wanted to rock really loud and really hard, beating Led Zeppelin at their own game. Whatever the motivation, the end result was the same — a leaden album, with occasional interesting guitar work smothered by heavy riffs and rhythms that don't succeed on a visceral level. It's a loud, lumbering record that may be of interest for Beck archivists, provided they want to hear absolutely everything he did.

It Works for Me
I liked it when it was first released and heard on FM when FM really was...well...FM. Yea, this album is rough 'round the edges. The vocals are garage and the instruments collide quite frequently as in 'Why Should I Care' and 'Lose Myself With You' and I defy anyone to try and find a dance beat anywhere here... but... that guitar and those drums, if 'Livin Alone' doesn't make your body wanna move then you don't know driving, pounding, head on Rock and Roll.
Any Jeff Beck fan should check this out
Only musicians can really understand this blend. Just as the works of Weather Report and such. It took a ear to understand what was going on. At the time improvision in music was king in young music and the three of these guys could deal it out. I saw these guys in one of their rare performances in Memphis. Truly as raw and straight as Jeff Beck comes.
BBA
I STRONGLY disagree with the 'album review' above. Beck has a lot of stuff that can be left behind, but this
is not one of them. His partners on this album were one of the best rhythm sections in rock and it worked well.
Throw out the boring "Black Cat Moan" and this album is great! I don't think the reviewer above did anything but
glance at this album- "really loud and really hard"? "loud, lumbering record"? 'Oh,to love you' has a Beach Boys
sound, 'Sweet Surrender' and 'I'm So Proud' are ballads. "Lady" and "Livin' Alone" have wide fluctations in intensity
and volume. And Kgun was right on with his/her comment about 'Livin Alone'. Reviewer, what were you listening to?
Beck has a large catalog of great work. I count this among my favorites.
