Incredible
This is a great recording of Beethoven's Late Quartets, some of the most brilliant music Beethoven (or anybody) ever composed. And of course they're played wonderfully, because they're performed by the Emerson String Quartet, one of the best string quartets around today. The only problem I might have with this is that they didn't separate the quartets so that you can buy them one work at a time, but they are all amazing, so you should buy them all anyway. The best of these works would have to be the Quartet in C-Sharp Minor and the Grosse Fuge from the Quartet in B-Flat. So, buy this and you will be a better person!
Beethoven's Last String Quartets
Beethoven's last 5 string quartets and the Grosse Fuge are the greatest chamber pieces besides Bach's unaccompanied solo violin sonatas and partitas. Beethoven takes the string quartet up into the same unspeakable space that Bach the solo violin pieces---some transcendent realm that only music can touch. In the A Minor, opus 132, he reaches an apotheosis of musical originality, aspiration and longing, particularly the 17 minute third movement, which is unlike anything written for string quartets.
Exquisite
These quartets are the last works that Beethoven ever wrote, and they are very innovative, thoughtful, beautiful, and passionate, and they make extreme demands on the performers who attempt to master them. The ESQ has, in my opinion, made a fine recording worthy of praise. They were able to capture Beethoven's spirit in these last quartets, especially my favorite (No. 14 in C-sharp minor). Kudos!
