The first choice for Beethoven
This is one of the most important Beethoven releases of recent times. Haitink may now be one of music's elder statesmen but rather than conducting Beethoven the way he always has done (which was always very well) he has radically revised his approach. He uses Jonathan Del Mar's excellent new editions of the scores but also draws on the wisdom of a lifetime conducting Beethoven. The music sounds fresh and vital.
There are no weak links in the cycle but 4, 5 and 6 in particular are outstanding. The 9th is truly amazing with some extraordinary playing from the orchestra.
What a deal!
I have been looking for a complete Beethoven cycle for a while, and am glad I came across this before I went and spent $40 on any of the other cycles out there. The LSO is a performance group like none other, and that is apparent in this recording. If I had to say one thing bad about the album, it would be that the tempo of the 5th is a faster tempo than I am used to hearing, and it doesn't seem as powerful as some other recordings I have heard, such as Solti's interpretation. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoy this CD. And thank you, Itunes, for the great price! A must have.
Very disappointed
All of the reviews said that this was a great collection of the nine symphonies, so I bought it. I as a musician that has performed all of the symphonies various times was very dissapointed in what I bought. This ensemble sounds great, but I hate the conductor's interpertation of the nine symphonies. This would be a great collection for the average listener or those that like very fast tempi, however not for the trained musician or listener. I recomend the Bernstein recordings.
