This is the definition of a steal!
I could not believe this is the complete symphonies of Beethoven by Harnoncourt and the C.O.E. on the Teldec label for $15! Great performances at a great price-ITunes, you are awesome!
Is this really it? Yes it is!
Ever since it was first released as a rather expensive CD boxed set in 1991, Harnoncourt's Beethoven cycle has not been without controversy, but it is also considered by many people to be definitive, myself among them. Other recordings might be more mainstream (such as Karajan), or more scholarly (such as Gardiner), but I think Harnoncourt's interpretations have all of those beat in terms of sheer gutsy emotion, especially in the early-to-middle symphonies. The performance of the inimitable 5th in particular is unsurpassed.
What's amazing is that the original full recording set is now available here as 256Kbps DRM-free iTunes Plus tracks at such a low price. The original boxed CD set came with a very hefty price tag in 1991 when it was first released, and still does if you can find an unopened copy. iTunes has given us a treat and a bargain. Thanks, iTunes!
