Beethoven #9, Solti and Chicago Symphony
What was arguably the finest orchestra in North America at the time (and maybe since), directed by arguably the finest conductor of the latter 20th century playing one of the two or three greatest works of music of all time. It certainly shows. To describe this recording would be to desecrate it. Solti's understanding trumps (but not by much) the orchestra's devoted adherance to his will. The tymps and trumpets are Beethoven's unheard, yet imagined sounds. The strings are controlled but, oh so joyful where it matters most, in the second and fourth movements. The third movement is played as written, For The Entire Orchestra, not merely the strings. The final movement? A glimpse of heaven. Yes, I like it; so will you!
Freude!
This album is the best representation of joy that i have ever heard. The quality and clarity of the recording are amazing, and the lyrics are in the origional German. This is one you have to have.
The Best Version of 9
There are a ton of choices out there, this one is totally mesmerizing. The tempo is perfect throughout. The great, hypnotic second movement is done to perfection: sounds totally controlled and yet on the very edge of chaos at all times. It's great to see this on the list of most popular albums.
