iTunes Review
The Stones awoke with a start from their psychedelic dream, both musically and spiritually. Beggars Banquet is the sound of that start, a decisive move toward their roots that would color the next five or so gloriously creative years. The record is best known, of course, for the brazen statements "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Street Fighting Man," but its skepticism and humor pervade nearly every cut. "No Expectations" is more proof of Jagger and Richards' ability to deliver heartrending ballads, while a cover of the Rev. Robert Wilkins' "Prodigal Son" shows how commandingly they'd mastered pre-electric blues. Even at its lightest, this is tough, smart music that remains endlessly listenable and challenging. Those wondering how they got to be called the greatest could begin learning the lesson here.
Customer Reviews
Beggars Banquet a delicious board of fare
Fed-up with their attempts to pace every trend set by The Beatles, Beggars Banquet was a return by the Rolling Stones to do what they have always done best-blues influenced rock 'n roll. Brian Jones was primarily responsible for steering the band back to it's Delta blues roots, after the abortive attempt on "Their Satanic Majesty's Request" to match The Beatles psychedelia of "Sgt. Peppers" and "Magical Mystery Tour." The result is some of the best songwriting ever by Jagger and Richard. "Sympathy for the Devil" is a bona fide sixties anthem, evoking the angst of the 60's generation, children born during World War Two and shaped in their adolescence and early adulthood by the chaos and political upheaval of the 1960's. "I shouted out, who killed the Kennedy's? Well after all, it was you and me!" No Expectations" is a classic slow acoustic blues that evokes the deep south of the Mississippi delta. "Dear Doctor" is a cautionary tale of deep woods romance told in the humorous style of a blue-grass country waltz. "Street Fightin' Man" is another full-blown 60's anthem, asking the question that might have motivated legions of future rockers: "Well, what can a poor boy do, 'cept ta sing for a rock 'n' roll band?" "Stray Cat Blues" is another tour de force about the hard scrabble life of sexual fantasy and innuendo amongst the legions of nubile young groupies and the castaway attitude of road hardened rockers. "Parachute Woman" is another catchy Keith Richards guitar riff that rocks with the effortless groove that is the Stones stock in trade. "Jigsaw Puzzle" puts one in mind of a prequel to "You Can't Always Get What You Want", the kind of storytelling that sounds like a novel set to blues and rock 'n' roll. "Beggars Banquet" is as lyrically beautiful and intense as any of the Stones albums to follow, and easily as musically innovative. The irony of this record is that Brian Jones, who was not long for the band, was the primary artistic force that shaped the music of "Beggars Banquet", even though he wasn't the songwriting force that "Jagger/Richard" had become. If you love the Stones like I do, "Beggars Banquet" is a must for your collection.
Let's Drink To The Salt Of The Earth
This was the last album completed by the original line up and started a string of releases unmatched by any other artist. "Sympathy for the Devil" is lyrical perfection, "Street Fighting Man" is a classic rock song, with no electric guitars. "No Expectations" is a beautiful ballad with Brian Jones on slide guitar. On this album the group went back to their roots and if you want to know why the Stones are considered the greatest rock n roll band in the world, then buy this album.
Rock & Roll at it's best
Not only one of the greatest stones albums of all time. One of the greatest albums of all time. From Sympathy For The Devil to Salt Of The Earth, This is why they are the greatest rock & roll bands in the world...
