Album Review

This is where the group's CD release history gets complicated. Beginnings was originally put together by Atco as a double LP to encourage new fans who'd missed them to buy the group's first two albums, and proved so successful that it was kept in print on CD by Polydor when it acquired the group's catalog. Polydor's single-CD version of this double LP, however, was substandard in audio quality, digitized from an LP production master, and their individual CDs of The Allman Brothers Band and Idlewild South were far superior. But when Capricorn got the library back in 1997, they remastered Beginnings along with the rest of the library.

TWO ALBUMS IN ONE

Don't bother getting THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND or IDLEWILD SOUTH. They are both included here in BEGINNINGS. I kid you not, this is nothing but the two albums put together. 1-7 comes from THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, and 8-14 comes from IDLEWILD SOUTH. Some of the songs here "Trouble No More" "Whipping Post" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" are all better heard on FILLMORE EAST and EAT A PEACH, but it's EVERY SONG on this album is it. Take a listen to the grooving instrumental "Don't Want You No More." The guitar interplay between Duane Allman and Dickey Betts is the highlight. The first seven songs are just pure raw blues with Gregg's best vocal on "It's Not My Cross to Bear" and a in your face blues jam on "Black Hearted Woman." "Dreams" is the most beautiful song highlighted by Duane Allman's searing guitar & bottleneck playing. IDLEWILD SOUTH itself is quite an album. "Revival" showcases the brilliant harmonized guitar parts played by Duane & Dickey which is also a great feel-good song. Some great slide playing and harmonica work by Thom Ducette on "Dont Keep Me Wonderin" which is a great song with a great vocal by Gregg. "Midnight Rider" itself is a classic southern rock song. More blues with Berry Oakley singing Muddy Waters' "Hoochie Coochie Man." "Please Call Home" is a beautiful ballad by Gregg, and "Leave My Blues at Home" is a trippy psycadelic jam making you want to move your feet. GET THIS ALBUM!

check out "please call home"

many of the tunes here a great Allman Bro classics / but few people know the song "Please call home" - w/ Duane on guitar, this tune is a wonder - sweet and tender, it's just an amazing work.

"Southern Rock" at it's very best

The Allman Brothers were talented beyond belief. Duane had played on many "Soul" records in the 60's and Greg had a voice that was born for the Blues. The rest of the band was tight and could play almost any style of music. If you want only one "Southern Rock" record, this is it! Peace.
