Album Review

The third album from Sweden's Soundtrack of Our Lives is their most concise and rocking effort. After the daunting eclecticism of 1996's Welcome to the Infant Freebase and the trippy ethereality of 1998's Extended Revelation, the relatively straightforward psychedelic rock of Behind the Music is something of a surprise. The thumping and clattering opener, "Infra Riot," is one of the catchiest songs they've ever done, and things just build from there. The booming drums and sharply strummed acoustic rhythm guitars of "Sister Surround" bear a startling resemblance to late-'60s Stones, followed immediately by a pretty but tense acoustic interlude called "In Someone Else's Mind" that would not sound out of place on a Syd Barrett album, itself the precursor to "Mind the Gap," which recalls the more melodic moments of the post-Barrett Pink Floyd. The album goes on in this vein for just under an hour, with one terrific song after another that sounds immediately like some classic forebear (there are hints of the Stooges, Love, and even Zappa in spots), but has the presence and strength to stand up on its own merits. Behind the Music lacks the totality and sonic impact of Extended Revelation, but the songs are more consistently memorable. Impressive stuff, and probably the Soundtrack of Our Lives album to start with for all but the most devoted psych/prog fan.

BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

This album is so good it needs to be bought! Just take a listen to the single "sister surround" and you will understand what i am talking about. This awesome progressive rock must be in any music lovers library!

Excellent Throughout

This album is one of my favorite albums. Every song in this album is very solid. I love the melodies The Soundtrack of Our Lives create. My favorite songs are "Tonight," "Nevermore," "Ten Years Ahead," and "The Flood". This Album really takes you for a journey. I felt like I was transported to another world the first time I listened to this album. The six members are all very instrumental to their sound. I especially like the two guitar sound with the twelve string guitar. I do like the songs that are more straight forward rock, such as "Infra Riot" and "Sister Surround," but I think The Soundtrack of Our Lives strength is in their melodies. I also must say I enjoy the unusal titles of the songs. This is a very important album in my life, thanks to the movie "In Good Company."

How are they guys not more popular!?!?!

Seriously, this album is unreal! Like in my title, how are these guys not more popular?!!? But it feels nice sometimes to know of this totally awesome band that for some reason no one hardly knows about. First off, while your reading this just start downloading the song, "Sister Surround." It will be ready to be listened too while you are still reading this review. I first saw these guys years ago one last night on the Late Show with David Letterman. They were playing the night before the release of this CD. It's hard to to tell which tracks to check out, but after Sister Surround, in order I'm going to say Independent Luxury, 21st Century Rip Off, Infra Riot, Mind The Gap, Keep The Line Movin', In Someone Else's Mind, The Years Ahead, Tonight, Stil Aging, Nevermore, Broken Imaginary Time, The Flood, Into the Next Sun, In Your Veins. If your looking for band/sound comparsions I'm going to go with, Radiohead, early Stones, Beatles, experimental 60's rock. (Not a bad group to sound like huh?) :)

Biography

Formed: 1995 in Gothenburg, Sweden

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Ebbot Lundberg (vocals) and Bjorn Olsson (guitar) were founders of the wildly exciting Swedish band Union Carbide Productions, which recorded several albums that mixed Captain Beefheart and punk (think Stooges) to wonderful effect in the late '80s. Eventually Ian Person joined Union Carbide Productions on guitar. By this point, however, Lundberg was becoming influenced by Love and other late-'60s psych-pop bands and was steering the band in this direction, causing friction within the band. After...
