Album Review

Nick Bracegirdle, who records under the name Chicane, has a strong pop sense to go with his taste for ambient and trance dance tracks. For one thing, he always employs simple but catchy melodies over his repetitious beats, and for another he cleverly hooks up with some established names looking to extend their appeal into the dance field. "Saltwater," heard here in two different mixes, is a dance treatment of the old Clannad hit "Theme from Harry's Game" (best known in the U.S. for its appearance in a car commercial), complete with Clannad lead singer Maire Brennan. And "Don't Give Up," also heard in two different versions, one of which is a hidden track at the end of the disc, features vocals by Bryan Adams, not that you're likely to recognize him the first time through. When he isn't heating up the dance floor with unlikely guests, Bracegirdle constructs spacy ambient tracks that cool things down, the first of which, "Overture," sounds like something left off a Pink Floyd album from the 1970s. Despite international success, the American popularity of this album is likely to be limited to clubs. Not that Americans don't like European dance novelties, but they tend to like them to be more obvious, like Eiffel 65.

Absolutely beautiful, an essential for lovers of electronica

Y'know how sometimes you like a song, and listen to it obsessively for a while and it eventually loses it's magic? I have listened to Saltwater more times than any other song, and I still love it after four years. It still makes me stop whatever I am doing and move. Overall, this is an incredibly solid album, more evolved than his previous Far from the Maddening Crowds and in my opinion, also better than his latest album (though it has has merit in it's own right). For people that love this album, Far from the Maddening Crowds should satisfy the need for more, especially with Lost you Somewhere, which utilizes the same elements as Saltwater, and just as beautifully. In summary, Chicane masters a unique style of chill dance music with this album, and also serves up some excellent electronica with delicious highlights. An essential album for anyone who likes the electronica, trance, or chill genres. --- It's funny that iTunes doesn't include the "bonus track" that is mentioned in the review - the radio edit of Don't Give Up. This track is really just a more conscise version focusing on the main melody and vocals, so it's not a glaring omission, just disappointing.

Chicane - A Contemporary Classic

Chicane is one of the most sonically rich and interesting pieces of music I've ever heard. I've listened to it often over the last 5 years. I'm not much into Dance music, but, like the Buddha Bar collections (which unfortunately are not available on iTunes), this album is so much more than just that. It's sophisticated music that any true music lover should find very satisfying. I've discovered the absolute best place to listen to it is out of doors, with a good outdoor sound system. It fills the air with beautiful sound.

Amazing album that transcends definition...

Ok let me first say that I am by no means a trance fan at all; in fact I am an underground house Dj with an affinity for the funkier side of dance music. However there is something beautiful and magical about Chicane's music that makes it timeless and appealing to many different sorts of peope. It is the perfect music for a long drive on a gorgeous day.. don't take my word for it, try it yourself. I am only sad that Chicane appears to have fallen off the face of the earth and certainly has disappeared from the internet. I am hoping that Nick is somewhere working on the follow up album to the Love on the Run single that I also like very much. In any case, enjoy this album; I'm sure if you are a first time Chicane listener that you will grow to love this wonderful album as much as I have. Also, check out their first album, "Far From the Maddening Crowds" with the original "Offshore".. breathtaking!
