Masterpiece
What a beautiful album. You may first be struck by the skill these guys have, being able to sing a capella so well, but once you get past that, you begin to realize the artistic depth of what's going on. This is really special.
What Ball in the House has achieved here is simply one of the best Christmas albums of all time. And I do mean "Christmas," not "Holiday." They've chosen only sacred material, and they present it in a way that, while firmly rooted in the band's distinctive comtemporary R&B style, brings the listener to a spiritual place. Sure, I love "Deck the Halls" as much as the next guy, but there's a message here, and they manage to get it across without all the banging and yelling found in much "Christian Rock."
"Believe" showcases all the various talents of the bands' members to give each song a unique feel. Aaron Loveland's high tenor paints "Away in a Manger" in an angelic glow, while infusing the more contemporary "Mary Did You Know" with an intensity not heard on most renditions of that song.
Dave Guisti's handling of the sublime "Some Children See Him" is the best I've ever heard. On that track as well as on the gently grooving "Angels We Have Heard On High," Dave shows that he can bring out the soul of even the simplest melody without ever over-singing. Ever.
On "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," we hear baritone Dan Szymsczak's rhythmic energy and coloristic range. Dan is also the album's engineer and producer, and he has ears of gold.
There are some pretty bold moves here. For instance, tracks 1, 4, 8, and 11 are different verses of the advent hymn "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," each arranged in a different style. There's also the playful "Little Drummer Boy," featuring the astounding vocal bass/beatbox powerhouse duo of Ryan Chappelle and John J. Ryan. The title track, a group-composed original, is overtly controversial, containing two words which in contemporary American culture are downright heretical: "DON'T BUY."
"Believe" is an album that would be great to have playing during Christmas Eve dinner, or to listen to alone while everyone else is asleep. If it changes you a little, that's okay. Sometimes music does that.
Amazing
Beautiful album. Hard to believe there are no instruments-- just beautiful voices.
LIsten to them! You will be amazed over and over again . . .
I had the opportunity to meet these gentlemen last night and hear their fabulous singing. I am a music teacher and will attest to their magnificent talents. These guys MEAN what they sing. I'm running out of adjectives because they are as kind as they are talented. If you can't hear them in person - and you SHOULD - then buy their albums - listen and be amazed... over and over again. Bravo guys!
