After years of having to filter her music and personality through the machinery of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks came into her own with her solo debut, 1981’s Bella Donna. Of the Mac’s three major songwriters, Nicks was always the most rock-oriented, and “Think About It” and leadoff single “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” prove her taste for jangling, boot-stomping pop-rock. “Edge of Seventeen” is even more intense. Nicks has never sounded more self-possessed, and even though she is without the sublime vocal support of Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, they are replaced by two of Nicks’ closest friends — Lori Perry and Sharon Celani. The trio’s close vocal harmonies give the album an aura of female solidarity and emotional intensity. Nicks’ patented brand of brooding, mystical mid-tempo rock is perfected on “Bella Donna,” “Kind of Woman,” “How Still My Love” and “Outside the Rain." Even more crucially, “After the Glitter Fades” and “Leather and Lace” reveal Nicks’ lifetime love for country and folk music. Brassy yet vulnerable, Bella Donna captures the essence of Nicks’ charm.

Amazing Solo Debut
Stevie's first solo album is a must-have. It has everything from rock to country to soft ballads and her voice just doesn't get any better than on this album. Edge of Seventeen has an amazing guitar riff and the vocals are outstanding. Other favorites are Leather and Lace, Outside the Rain (which Stevie typically opens her concerts with) and How Still My Love. Every song on this album is great - not to be missed. The Queen of Rock-n-Roll does not disappoint on this solo venture.
Ignored Masterpiece Stands the Test of Time
I think out of all the albums of the 80s, this album did not get its do. It spawned 4 Top 40 hits and hit number one on the album charts and yet, somehow, rolling stone originally only gave it 3 stars in 1981. BIG MISTAKE! This is one of the few albums out of the 80's that keeps selling and stands the test of time. From start to finish, this album is great. Nicks was in super songwriting form and so was her voice. The harmonies are gorgeous and so are the songs. This is the best classic rock album by a female from the 80s and deserves to be in everyones collection. It's a shame that it never got the credit it deserves.
Masterpeice
There is only one word for this record. MASTERPEICE. If you only have 20 bucks in your wallet, get Bella Donna and Trouble in Shangri La. They both do to you what a record should. Crank it up, listen and youll walk away a better man for having heard it... Its almost like all the answers to everything you ever wanted to know are in these albums....
