iTunes Review

It’s all about the voice, really. As Laura Jansen hits the angelic high notes of “Bells,” it’s obvious she possesses natural talent. This debut album combines her two EPs released in Holland, 2007’s Trauma and 2009’s Single Girls, with a newly-recorded version of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” and a live version of “Single Girls” added as a bonus. Her songwriting is equally adventurous. “Single Girls” catalogs the things she’s done since breaking up with the lover she’s addressing in song. “Wicked World” adds extra sassy beats and vocal effects to make this Fiona Apple-like romp even more alluring. But it’s the purebred beauty and exquisite production of “Perfect,” “Come to Me” and the reggae “Soljah” that allow this natural soprano the room to become herself with outsized results. Her piano rendition of “Use Somebody” proves her great versatility. Her musical facility is not all that unexpected coming from a Berklee School of Music graduate, but the music’s incredible heart cannot be taught.

Just wonderful...

In my endless hunt for truly beautiful music, I often find that singer-songwriters lack in one of the two areas that comprise their title. If they're a great songwriter, they may not be the most incredible singer... and vice versa. Rarely do we find those who manage to soar in both mediums... (think Sara Bareilles... Ray LaMontagne... you know the ones.) With Laura Jansen, I'm just delighted to say that she's got both down. Really down. Her album is beautifully sung and poignantly written. It's deeply personal and beyond moving. The orchestrations are simplistic and compliment her piano playing well. I just love this album and can't wait to see more of her.

Can I give it 6 stars?

Really, there should be an "exceeding 5 stars" rating option. Diggin' this like archeology.

Absolutely Beautiful

This is one of my most favorite albums of this year. Just give "Wicked World" a listen... just amazing! Also, one of the best cover songs of last year was put on this release: "Use Somebody"

Years Active: '00s

Just one year after moving to Los Angeles to jump-start her music career, Dutch singer/songwriter and pianist Laura Jansen recorded her debut EP, the five-song Trauma. Frequent appearances around L.A. earned her a growing fan base that stretched across North America, and in August 2007 one of her songs, "Soljah," made it onto one of the episodes of MTV's Newport Harbor, a new series based on their successful Laguna Beach show. In 2009, her Single Girls EP would be released in Holland. That same year,...
