Album Review

Robert Rich has released two CDs of material from compilation discs and other formats, with Below Zero the second of these. These compositions, like those on A Troubled Resting Place, were created for the compilations and subsequent CDs in Rich's catalog. He provides a technical explanation of his intentions on this disc, delving into thermodynamics and other heavy relationships. While it is easy to get lost in the liner notes, it is easier (and more fun) to get lost in the music. One of Rich's better releases, the dark atmospheres are full of organic textures and experimental timbres. Deep listening is more of an event than just an experience. There are few discs that approach this level, and only the best efforts of Steve Roach, Alio Die, and Mathias Grassow rate this highly.

Massive

That is the word that I would use to describe this work by Robert Rich. Rich creates an utterly cosmic ambience with alien, disharmonic, and metallic textures weaving in and out. This is one of the more experimental and "out there" of his works, focusing more on non-organic type textures than his more "earthy" albums. Rich conveys his sense of cosmic entropy quite well, and it provokes a unique feeling. If there were light ambience and dark ambience, I would classify this as "grey ambience". I would definitly recommend this album to an active, engaged, and open minded listener.

His association with older space music pioneers such as Steve Roach, Kevin Braheny, and Michael Stearns...
