A very exciting live concert performance
Conductor Sir Colin Davis is a renowned Berlioz specialist. The London Symphony Orchestra is one of the world's greatest. Berlioz in this, the most popular and most autobiographical of his compositions, shows off his skill as one of the greatest orchestrators of all time. This concert performance, one of the 'LSO Live' series, is very exciting. I have heard many recordings of this marvelous symphony, and none has given me more pleasure than this one. (My only criticism, and it is a minor one, is to wish for slightly faster tempi.) I recommend it very highly.
Top Notch
A fantastic recording of a fantastic conductor at the fore of a fantastic orchestra playing a (ahem) fantastic piece of music. I've had the pleasure of seeing Colin Davis conduct personally several times. He's not very exciting (he's one of the old school less-is-more musicians like Reiner with the CSO), but he's an incredibly sensitive musician, who truly understands what the music is doing (he doesn't just hear notes). Combine that with the technical mastery, beautiful tone, and matched sensitivity of the LSO, and you have a fine (live!) recording. I highly recommend this recording. The fact that it is affordable only adds to my recommendation. If you've never heard the Symphonie Fantastique before, you are in for a treat, and this is a fine way to experience it the first time. This is London's Brass Section at the finest I've ever heard it as well.
Naming glitch?
I've noticed that although Symphonie Fantastique was writen by Hector Berlioz the album classified by composer says that it was written by Antonin Dvorak. Can anyone fill me in on this? Other than that this a excelent album and an excelent symphony, preformed by an outstanding orchestra with an outstanding conductor. Well worth the money, and many kudos to the LSO and Sir Colin Davis.
