iTunes Review

The brainchild of maestro and main songwriter Shock G, Oakland rhyme collective Digital Underground first emerged in the late ‘80s, bringing their inimitable blend of danceable anthems, sexual comedy, and P-Funk-inspired production. Best known for their ubiquitous single "The Humpty Dance," they were like nobody else in the game, a never-ending party on wax and onstage, funny, funky, and freaky all at the same time. This Rhino compilation showcases all their hits and preferred album cuts from their critical and commercial peak, including the absurdly catchy "Kiss You Back" (featuring George Clinton himself), anti-plastic surgery manifesto "No Nose Job," and erotically charged crowd favorite "Freaks of the Industry." Though sometimes mistakenly thought of as one-hit wonders, DU actually had several successful singles, continued recording and touring for 20 years, and are semi-responsible for unleashing 2Pac on the world (he started out as a dancer with them). This has all of their stellar early work in one place, ideal for longtime followers and new fans alike.

Digital Underground built most of their music from P-Funk samples and developed a similarly weird sense of style and humor, highlighted by Shock-G's outrageous costumes and the whole band's parade of alter egos. Of all these alter egos, Shock-G's Humpty Hump — a ridiculous comical...
