Album Review
Berlin's electro-pop sound is salvaged only by the enduring and assertive voice of Terri Nunn, which is why The Best of Berlin is the most preferable place to hear this Los Angeles-based group's music. The synth-soaked punch of "No More Words" from 1984's Love Life album and the week-long number one ballad "Take My Breath Away" from the film Top Gun are the album's high points, while the other tracks are made up of clean and bright techno pop/rock with heavy emphasis stemming from three different keyboard players employed throughout the band's career. Berlin's '80s poignancy provided some rather palatable music, even if the charts didn't say so. Songs like "For All Tomorrow's Lies" and "Blowin' Sky High" could compete with anything Soft Cell or A Flock of Seagulls spouted at the time, and the range of Nunn's vocals elevated most of Berlin's efforts above the norm of the run-of-the-mill synthesizer glitz, but only marginally. A compressed lineup of their most accomplished material is definitely the best way in which to enjoy Berlin, avoiding all the inessentials that crept through their albums.
Customer Reviews
A trip down memory lane, and a great one.
This best of album throws together my favorite Berlin songs that I listened to throughout high school. Terri Nunn's vocals were amazing then and still are today. I must have attended 40 concerts in my youth.... we saw everyone that came into town (Salt Lake City). Yes, it gives away my age, but I happened to have 3rd row tickets to a Thompson Twins & Berlin show at the University of Utah way back when. It easily ranks in my top 3 shows of all time. Berlin played everything they had and Terri worked the sold out crowd like no other. The Twins (their Into the Gap tour) put on an amazing show as well, using lights and screens that no one had seen before. Anyway, these songs took me back and I was glad to find a compilation that truly is a "Best Of."
This is a MUST buy....
Like one of the other reviewers wrote: you had to be there. When Pleasure Victim came out, it was the album to have because it stood out from the lot of posers just putting crap out. I'm a little miffed to see that Tell Me Why isn't on here, but oh well. Will I Ever Understand You just rocks, love it! This is a really good Greatest Hits, I recommend it. Note to iTunes Store: Why is this by song only NOW?? I had purchased this here at ALBUM price (I was too lazy to convert a cassette tape). It would be nice if you had a pricing standard instead of randomly ripping off the customer at will. Geez.
Great bargain for one of the best 80's collections
For the price this is a must-buy. I saw Berlin perform at the House of Blues in LA last week and they're incredible. I never even realized that they wrote "Sex" which is not only very catchy and funny but insightful as well. Highly recommended.
