Fresh, edgy indie rock with soul
This is a superb debut. The songs are fresh and innovative, yet familiar. This is indie rock, no doubt. But it is not your typical jangly guitar humdrumary; musically and lyrically these songs have depth, substance, edge, originality, and soul. The performances are passionate. This is exciting music!
Research Society effortlessly mixes a little hop hop, electronica and soul into their unique guitar-based indie songs, and they do it with class and tact. The tone is warm: gritty riffs blended with intricate guitar dynamics and impassioned vocals, propelled by a driving rhythm section that really grooves. The music soars!
Whether you like the pioneers of alternative music, the best bands of the 90s, or contemporary standouts like Bloc Party, Interpol, The National, or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, you'll like this EP. Even as a 5-song EP, it is a complete statement and ambitious undertaking. Research Society is a special band, and Best of Seven is an impressive musical statement. Bravo!
Solid Debut Album
This is a really strong debut album. I'm biased a bit, as I've had the pleasure of playing with G Mann in the past, but after hearing some tracks pre-drummer (and liking those as well), I was totally blown away with how the entire band came together. For instance, September, which I've heard a couple of previous versions really rocks.
There are a lot of good 80's influences that make you reflect upon some of the seminal alternative bands of the era, but this album is not a tribute album not is it a derivative work. It's fresh in the way the Killers were before they became, well... the Killers.
Nothing better than an original album that already feels like a well-known favorite album. Well done folks.
Well, All Right!
I have known components of this band when they were awkward little boys, so to hear such a complex and informed performance from the lot of them is kind of an awe inspiring experience. Sometimes the vocals may be thin, or the drums under-produced, or the guitar a bit plaintive, but the humanity of the thing is what impresses me the most. It may escape some people that there is huge significance in a multicultural band playing 80's inspired nineties' music in 2010, but therein lies the true beating heart of this ep. It doesn't have to be here. Perhaps someone in Greencastle, indiana would say it shouldn't be here. But this little gem exists in the rough, where you find all glorious little gems as yet undiscovered. Research Society should be proud of its strong offering.
