Band Breaks Up, Label Releases Greatest Hits to Cash In

Many of the consumate Zippers songs are not included on this collection, and I would bet that no band members were involved in the compilation. The brilliant beginning to Perennial is there, but in reverse order?! No Danny Diamond? Three songs off the worst Zippers album, and not one from the impossible to find Sold Out CD? And NO live songs? The only rarity on the CD version of this compilation, Don Raleigh's Dancing on the Moon, is not even included for the download version. This was a great band that made great albums, and this CD is a fair to poor representation of the band. For the true fan, this is NO treasure trove of rarities and gems. For all who don't have them, I'd recommend buying the complete Zippers albums (they aren't on iTunes, and all but Bedlam are solid) or if your are a real fan looking for something fresh, check out Maxwell/ Mosher (on iTunes). It contains new versions of Hell and Put a Lid on it PLUS 12 great new pieces.

Teeth are extruded and bones are ground and baked into cakes which are passed around!

Originality and pure musical qualities hold this band up above the rest of the bands that tried making a come back when Swing was resurfacing in the late 90s. Don't get me wrong, I saw the Cherry Poppin' Daddies at the House of Blues in LA back in the day, but it was overly produced. This band is pure and makes no attempt to hide the grit. I think that's why I appreciate their music so much. I love this band.

We need more bands like this!

Since the moment this band came out I have been in love with them. It sounds like it's straight out of a WWII cantina. If we had more bands like this, we could actually consider modern day music to be talented. I am a Fabulous Lounge Lizard and wish there were more of us!

Biography

Formed: 1993

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The commercialization of alternative music in the '90s resulted in many strange one-hit wonders, but few were quite as unpredictable as Squirrel Nut Zippers. During a time when hipsters were obsessed with swing music in its relation to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin's Rat Pack, the Zippers were fascinated with big-band swing and Harlem, creating a tongue-in-cheek salute to '20s and '30s jazz. For younger listeners familiar with the style but not the content of classic hot jazz, the band was good fun,...
