Album Review

Released in 2010, A Best of Us… For the Rest of Us is a greatest-hits compilation from California ska-punk band Reel Big Fish. Due to a conflict with the Jive label, the two-disc set is made up of re-recorded versions of their hits, featuring classics like “Everything Sucks” and “Sell Out,” as well as covers of a-ha’s “Take on Me” and Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl.” The second disc features bonus “skacoustic” versions of their hits. While these remade versions don’t quite capture the energy of the originals, the disc of acoustic tracks makes this a compilation that should appeal to both old fans and new.

The Real Greatest Hits

DO NOT BUY Greatest Hit and More. BUY THIS INSTEAD! It's all of Reel Big Fish's greatest hits revisited. The old songs with a new sound. It's true that it doesn't have the energy or tempo of the originals, but remember, it's "for the rest of us." They definitely sound more mature in this album, and some people might like them better that way. Anyway, at 7.99, you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal for 26 songs...

Though, the best thing about Reel Big Fish is that they're legitimately funny while remaining musically sound (no pun intended). They make me laugh, and they'll make you laugh too.

Felt Like a Live Album w/o Energy

Any long time fans of RBF know how much effort they put into their musicianship, and this album is no different in that respect. The songs are polished, but lack the in-your-face energy of the original recordings. If you're new to the RBF, you're probably better off grabbing these songs off the original albums(Turn the Radio Off, Why Do They Rock So Hard?, and Cheer Up!, respectively), and if you're a fan from way back, "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album", has most of these songs, with that energy that only comes from a live RBF performance. Overall not a bad album, there's just better RBF albums that have these songs.

it reminds me of being in high school, the best times of my life. something is missing though. back then we were punk kids and ska was better with that hard-edge sound

Reel Big Fish was one of the legions of Southern California ska-punk bands to edge into the mainstream following the mid-'90s success of No Doubt and Sublime. Like most of their peers, the band was distinguished by their hyperkinetic stage shows, juvenile humor, ironic covers of new wave pop songs, and metallic shards of ska.
