Great Solo Record!
John is known as the lead guitarist of Dashboard Confessional. His first solo album is an impressive debut (previously he released an EP with brothers under the name The WImbledons). However, it is important to note that this is not an acoustic effort as some Dashboard fans might expect. It has an incredibly full and rounded sound. It is more reminiscent of something from another time where pop records meant something. The vintage pop rock styling with reflective and introspective lyrics made me think of Beach Boy's Pet Sounds or an Elvis Costello record. Well done and am excited for more! Better By Design is Fantastic
It's rare to find a singer/song writer who can combine such a good turn of a phrase with a fresh sound. John Lefler really nails it on this album. It's worth listening to this whole album several times. Every time I listen to it, I hear new phrases and dynamics. It gets even better with time not old like some albums do. LOVE IT!
this album IS better by design!
It is not often you come across a album where you can sit and listen end-to-end and enjoy the experience from one song to the next -- Lefler's "Better By Design" does it. It is exciting to hear such a fresh blend of the likes of Sting, Jellyfish, Crowded House, XTC, and more (all those great musician's musician/bands) reinvented through Lefler's musical genius and ability to express and excite. You never know where the songs are going to go -- the unpredictability and colorful chord changes are very refreshing compared to most of today's stale top 40. It is different than a Dashboard fan might expect, but in a good way. Definitely and exciting addition to anyone's collection. Love it!
