Better for the Metaphor

The reviews are right on target. This is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time, and quickly became a favorite. Each track has something you will want to hear over and over again, and each track stands on its own for either the lyrics, melody, or great instumentals. Chris Hicken (Cantinero), a very talented singer-songwriter, has blended humor with critical commentary on our modern times. My favorite tracks right now include Selfish, Go Getter, and My House. His first cd, Championship Boxing is equally addictive. I can hardly wait for a third cd. Cantinero gets my vote for best artist of the year!

I, too, became an instant fan of Cantinero (Chris Hicken) after hearing "Astronaut" on the radio. Bought Championship Boxing and marveled that EVERY SONG was first rate. Amazingly, Chris has achieved the same feat with Better for the Metaphor.

All the songs are in turn lovely, lyrical, interesting, amusing, memorable, and pleasing in every way. Some of them really rock (Go Getter, Stay in Bed), others are quietly beautiful (Sometimes, Safe). Chris has a way of writing songs that seem wistful, melancholy, yet leave this listener feeling somehow uplifted (probably because of his pleasing voice). The musicianship here is tight & clever, the social & political commentaries dead-on without being preachy. Chris is also a master of the
bridge. BFTM is the work of a brilliant songwriter/singer at the height of his powers. Can't wait for the next album!

Even better than his first album

Cantinero just keeps getting better and better. On this new album, there is ample evidence of his pushing himself toward constant evolution as an artist.

"My House" could replace "Little Boxes" as the opening song on the TV show "Weeds."

"Go Getter" could be an anthem for his (our) generation.

"Safe" just might be one of the most gorgeous songs of the year.

I could go on, track-by-track, but I'll stop here. Download this album and see for yourself.

Biography

Years Active: '00s

You try and try, and then when you give up, it all falls into place. That's the story behind Cantinero, the left-of-center pop group that's really just multi-instrumentalist Chris Hicken. Born and raised in Birmingham, England, Hicken fell in love with America — especially the American audience...
