iTunes Review

Prolific singer/songwriter Kevin Devine continues developing with each release. His first few solo albums were quiet acoustic efforts, while 2009’s Brother’s Blood involved a full band on several tracks. He then joined with indie rock outfit Manchester Orchestra to form Bad Books for a 2010 release. For Between the Concrete & Clouds, his sixth release, he fully embraces the possibilities of a group dynamic by bringing in his five-piece Goddamn Band to back him up, and he sounds liberated as a result. The space to expand his ideas and explore sonic options results in dynamic performances filled with crunchy, overlapping guitars (“A Story, a Sneak” and the title track), bouncy power pop (“Off Screen,” “The First Hit”), and textured keyboards (“Awake in the Dirt” and the majestic “11-17”). Yet while the music has expanded, he edits himself lyrically to produce a concise and focused set of songs. His talent for wordplay and rich imagery is still there, but he’s not as lyrically dense as in the past; he’s content to let his melodies carry more of the load on this energetic release.

FIRST!!!

This CD is great, Kevin Devine really expands as a writer and is filling his songs out nicely. Now I love "Circle Gets the Square," but he just has now figured out how to fill his songs out so that there's something interseting going on in each section. Now I'll be truthful, not all the songs are as great as others but it is definatly worth getting, if your a Kevin Devine fan.

Wow.

Every cd is another installment to the story of Kevin's life artistically portrayed by his music and lyrics. In this cd you can really see the influence of Andy Hull and Manchester Orchestra musically from Kevin's working with them on their Bad Books album accompanied with Kevin's always profound lyrics. Solid cd but can't say I expect any less from this artist.

Way beyond...

If you are considering buying this album just stop reading and go ahead and buy it. Kevin Devine does not disappoint. Every record is different, this is true. But this album seriously, seriously, is awesome. If you don't have anything else by him you can go ahead and buy this one and you will get a nice taste of his range, and bonus for you all the songwriting and instrumentation is pretty spot-on. This guy is an amazing performer, if you've never seen him live you should go. Whether he has the band or not he pours his heart out on stage and if you can't appreciate a guy that does that *every* time he plays, then maybe you should stop listening to music.

Aside from that this album has a few standouts: well really half the album is a standout, the final track is worth the wait. So stop reading, do some buying, and start some listening. Only a handful of guys can put an album together like KD so do him and yourself a favor, and just buy it. Seriously.
