Album Review

An astonishingly good record, covering a multitude of Delta-based styles and songs from Charley Patton to Muddy Waters, as well as a few originals. It's just Harris and his acoustic guitar, some dazzling finger work and a voice that's about as good as you're going to hear from anyone doing blues and still walking around at the end of the 20th century. The material alternately surges and broods, and once in a while does both at the same time, and it's all worth hearing.

Great Overlooked Contemporary Artist

Great record. Worth owning. Honestly, lots of people praise records because they are already fans of an artist or have been enamored of the record for so long that they've forgotten what it was like as a new listener, but this record really is a gem. You don't even have to know anything about the blues. If you like the samples, get it. Trust me, it ages well. For both fans of the blues and casual listeners, Harris has tremenduous technical ability as well as an immediate emotive playing style. His songs and voice aren't so polished that they lack the elemental appeal of acoustic blues, but I'm still always surprised and delighted when he substitutes the twang of a guitar string for a repeated word in a refrain. There are lots of great songs on here, but I find "61 Highway" particularly moving and mournful. "Going to Brownsville" is likewise wonderful. Sure, there's lots of serious musicians that don't get the attention they deserve, but Harris, particularly, is doing something, I think, culturally important. I guess Scorcese even featured him in his documentary "The Blues." I didn't give this record five stars because it isn't "Never Mind the Bollocks" or "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" or "Surfer Rosa." But it's pretty great. No one ever buys records because of reviews, but if you can be swayed at all, pick up this record. It's dynamite and I continue to enjoy it after several years.

The Blues is Back

This album assures that the blues don't die. Harris' style reaches deep into the roots of blues with soul that is undeniable, but manages to infuse the blues with his own fresh take.

Biography

Born: February 21, 1969 in Denver, CO

Genre: Blues

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Corey Harris has earned substantial critical acclaim as one of the few contemporary bluesmen able to channel the raw, direct emotion of acoustic Delta blues without coming off as an authenticity-obsessed historian. Although he is well versed in the early history of blues guitar, he's no well-mannered preservationist, mixing a considerable variety of influences — from New Orleans to the Caribbean to Africa — into his richly expressive...
