After releasing some mediocre material in the years following his 1990 departure from the Stranglers, he’s released 3 crackin’ albums in the last 5 years. His most recent CD, “Beyond Elysian Fields” is arguably the best of the 3. To his own admission, it took Hugh a while to find his own style. This is a CD of stylings with mature pop sensibility that also reflects his passion for 1960s psychedelia. With no marketing fanfare this album is now available and needs to find its way to your CD player! The album kicks off with “Land Of A 1000 Kisses”, an infectious upbeat pop strummer that sets the pace for the rest of the album. “Ola Cadiz” in title is a twist on the old Stranglers track ‘Goodbye Toulouse’, but in content this is a beautiful ballad complete with occasional castanets in honour of the Spanish city. Next up is “Do Right Bayou” which is being released as a single later this month. It’s a nice track, but you’ll eventually realize that every other track on this CD is just as good. “Under Her Spell” is classic Cornwell with the laughable lyric ‘She is from heaven and I am from hell’. Also, many Stranglers fans will recognize a familiar bass riff reminiscent of the Feline LP. Next is “Beauty On The Beach”, a catchy tune complete with flute to add dimension, and a hand-clap chorus to get the head bopping. The next track takes a few listens to fit well, as “The Story of Harry Power” feels more like an adapted sea-shanty than what you’d normally expect from Mr. Cornwell. The story-telling style reminds one of Bob Dylan. Ah, what a beautiful transition as next up is “24/7”, Hugh’s tribute to the man. “It’s gotta be the greatest job. It’s 24/7, just being Bob!” A fun number that must be one of Hugh’s own favourites as it’s gotten regular airings at his gigs over the last year or two. “Mr. Big” rumbles along with a gripping dark tone and organ fill that I can’t help but think how this would have fit well in the Stranglers catalogue. A little lighter, “Picked Up By The Wind” is another upbeat tune that continues to reflect that Hugh is really have fun these days and is cranky out some delightful intelligent pop tunes. “I Don’t Mind” doesn’t have as much character as some of the other songs here, but it fits nicely, so no complaints. Wrapping up the album is “Henry Moore”. It’s a slower, beautiful mantra in recognition of the song-titled artist complete with xylophone again adding some a-typical dimension to the number. Hugh is on tour currently promoting both this new CD as well as his simultaneously released autobiography, “A Multitude Of Sins”. Pick up both and appreciate this man, his life experiences and the music he is making. He deserves a greater audience, so I hope you discover his talent and become one of the fortunate people enjoying his musical offerings. Written by Steve Tivey, October 2004
