New Side of Hiromi
After four albums of original compositions - and they were TRULY original -- Hiromi is back, with an album of mostly "standards." But as the album title suggests, they're Beyond "standard." I'm no jazz expert, but have loved Hiromi's music for being full of musical talent, uniqueness, and great piano skill. The standards on this album - range from 100 yearold classical (Debussy's Claire de Lune, something I'd never heard before) to the classic standard My Favorite Things, to a psychidelic Jeff Beck guitar tune. The standards are a great new side of Hiromi for me. It's all great music - breaking boundaries of piano jazz, electronic keyboards, and sheer speed and technical competency -- but with the greatest joy. Seeing her in person in June 2008, I noted that she can't stop smiling through the show -- reminded me of Eddie Van Halen who can't do a show without grinning nonstop. She loves music; and you'll love her.
Once again
Another fantastic album by Hiromi. She continues to write music that is not only unique, but truly a joy to listen to as well. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same artist who wrote Brain also wrote Beyond Standard, both equally as good, just very different. Congrats on another amazing album Hiromi. Also congratulations and thank you to Concord Music. They continue to sign some of the best new talent in the Jazz world (like Christian Scott and Taylor Eigsti for example).

This is one of the few albums where EVERY SINGLE song is a hit. Very original tunes and I am so glad I own it. I definitely recommend buying this. I play some jazz piano myself and am just blown away every time I hear Hiromi. She is one of the best pianists of all time. No question.
